Go get the Merc, You know you want to and if you get the Volvo you will only end up changing it for the Merc anyway.
If you find the right one then the chance of problems is very little.
we have had Mercs in the family for the past 25 years and I can count on one hand the faults we have had with them all.
Lookafter them and they will look after you.

I entirely agree Mark - few faults in a total of 7 cars in my experience.

I only once ever had an acute attack of "car shame" - driving a 3 year old Volvo S80 on the M42 when overtaken by a young lady in a CL500 with the distinctive registration "3 JOB".

I think the risks of car shame/embarrassment are higher in a Volvo than a MB - I would go for the Mercedes. Worth looking at the CL 500 though - rather less complicated and expensive (including maintenance costs) than the CL55, but nevertheless with acres of power and comfort.

I ran a 12-month old S60 D for a while ( 30,000k) It was very expensive to service, parts were dear but it was reliable. That said I've had 6 Mercs, the first a 2-year old 190E blew the auto box at 42k, the last a brand new C320CDI in 2007 broke down with just 242 miles on the clock!

The other mercs a SE300 - C220 - A140 were all ultra reliable.

You pay your money and take your chance as with all purchases.
