Saw this recently:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006mg74/features/bmw-chains-snap-n47-engine-2007-2009

It happened to me last year on a 318d estate 2008, 80k cost me £3000 to get a second hand engine put in, which was the cheapest option even though it was still one of the N47 engines just from a 2009 car. I got shot of the car asap so cost in total £4000 with the loss I had to take on trading it. It had always been serviced from BMW as it was a lease car before me, and I had it serviced at AJ Robertson (indie specialist) in Brighton. WHen I asked BMW to pay for the repar/new engine they basically said get stuffed as I had gone outside there network, and as I hadnt bought it from there approved used cars.

Whereas Mercedes would have stumped up had it been a merc sold and maintained outside their network?

And of course they pay up for rust as well....

Not good in this day and age that these things can still happen and we foot the bill, it must be the only trade in the world where such goings on still take place.

Like the rust on MB's it goes on because people let them get away with it.
I was fobbed off repeatedly over corrosion but I am an awkward educated sod who doesn't like bullies and wouldn't stand for it.

Sometimes it looks to us like manufacturers take a backward step when they design things. You expect progress to be something better not worse. BMW have made some very good cars & engines in there time & now turn out this unreliable rubbish.
Years ago Cavaliers & Astra’s you could change a clutch in half an hr due to their very good gear box /clutch design. Next generation was the Vectra, a clutch replacement meant engine & transmission out. Why???. A backwards step as I see it.

The OM651 4 cylinder diesel with the timing gear at the rear is the most ubiquitous engine in the Mercedes UK range being found in the present C, E, S, CLS, M and SLK class range in single or more commonly twin turbo form of the engine.

HERE'S A PICCY of a BMW N47 engine . It's the chain in the middle that goes evidently?

BMW_N47_19.jpg

ps if you have the latest diesel mini you have a derivative of this engine.

I'd be suicidal if that was me, but if you step back a bit - say you'd bought the car new, you'd have lost, what £15K? on it.

Big repair bills are a risk you take when buying second-hand, and buying from unapproved source and using unapproved servicing just increases the risk - not the risk of something going wrong, but the risk of having to pay for it yourself.

Also, I wouldn't dream of running a car like this without some form of warranty - I still have one on mine. I'm not bothered about small faults, but I want a back-stop in place in case of a mega bill.

So what did you do and what was the outcome, please?

A Jag. Jags are my favourite.

Just goes to show that progress isn't always a good thing. I remember the Mk1 Renault 5, which had the engine and gearbox inline, but back to front, with the gearbox at the front of the car, behind the radiator. And with the steering rack over the top of it. I thought it was just the French who make cars in an odd way. To do an engine change on one of those cars meant taking most of it to pieces first. In fact, the timing chain was hardly accessible with the engine in the car. Except that it was, if you had an angle grinder. I was in a scrap yard one day, and saw one where someone had cut through the bulkhead to get to the timing chain, rather than take the engine out to do it. Afterwards, they had bolted a sheet of metal over the hole, and put the carpet back over it.

Merc now sold - XC60 D5 arrived
One could argue a 3rd party warranty would have helped.

My merc after 3 inlet poirt manifold and one crankshaft bearing and hitting 100,000 miles cost me 3 years of WD premiums and small excesses.

On the crankshaft bearing - Mercedes paid half with the dar on 90,000 miles. Pretty good customer service methinks
