This bill is for a new door N69/2 door ECU, it did not fix the fault but no important right now. The actual fault was in the wire connecting the window motor to the ECU. I removed the door card as the window worked sometimes, they did not remove or replace the door film, they tore a 7" hole to get to the ECU. The original door insulation is still on the door.. All in all it took me 25 mins from start to finish.

On the bill it says
£48 to replace the ECU with door card removed
£67.90 to remove trim and install
£135.80 to replace and install door film
£29.10 for software
£210 for Door N69 ECU
Total with VAT £585.56

So £200 overcharged:(:(

I will send the invoice to them and see what they have to say, I should send a copy to HQ as well.

This should have been reported to trading standards and the police.

Obtaining money by deception is a criminal matter.
Make a statement to the police.

I knew the car had a new ECU as the invoice came with the car, I have only just read the invoice. the thing is the door film as the call it has not been replaced or indeed removed as it is still like that today with the factory fitted film, in WIS is it says "ease away the film from the control unit" and this was what they did plus tearing it in the process.

It was only because the window opened every now and then and would not close within a hour that I had to fix it my self.

I could not belive they charged for software.when most of time take software off old unit.

I would take car back and ask them to show you the film they replaced.Make sure to do that in 30 days
Even in better undo your fix and take it back complain about film and then say fault is still there while you have door card off show me it

I'd go to the police, make a statement, get a copy of that statement plus a crime reference number and send both of these to the dealer cc'ing MB HQ.

I do not think that there is a statute of limitations on obtaining money through deception. It is criminal fraud and you should treat it as such from the start.

Oh and document everything with photos or video footage too to include in your statement.

Fuzz will almost certainly say it's a civil matter unless it can be proven that the deception is ongoing, widespread and of an organised nature.

The very definition of Main Stealer network, I know but still.

Thing is, if someone had checked the work had been done after getting the car back the stealer would insist that the 'tear' was a/ already there or b/done elsewhere.

They do it because they know they can get away with it.

It doesn't stop Malcolm reporting it as a crime and obtaining a crime reference number- whether or not the Fuzz decide to pursue or not. That is the important thing, that CRN allows Malcolm to show MB that he is taking this seriously.

In order for a CRN to be issued a crime needs to be recorded.

If it's deemed a civil matter, which it will be, that'll be the end of at as far as Johnny Copper is concerned. No CRN will be issued.

You're right in that it doesn't stop someone reporting it as a crime though.

Malcolm wasn't the victim so I dont think he can report anything.

Nice move on letting the dealer know that YOU know what they are like.

I was sitting in a MB dealer waiting for my car and overheard a conversation behind me.

It went something like "Mr Smith, your car is ready. It was a puncture, the nail was right on the edge so It needed a new tyre". My attention was grabbed at this point as only the week before I had the same thing in a runflat that cost me £200.

"Thats £535 sir" I choked on my free coffee. "Thankyou" said Mr Smith, are the others OK, will they last until the next service?". At this point I really wanted to say something out loud, he'd had his pants pulled down already and was then asking for a spank!

The service man did say the rest were fine so I bit my lip as I was having a free lunch on MB - due to a bit of a cock up but thats another story.

I had a similar experience when a pot hole in Dover destroyed one of my tyres. Drove cautiously to a tyre shop on the deflated shredded carcass of the dead tyre.

They quoted £256 - which, on inquiry included tracking and other extras. "Well sir, the car has been driven on a flat rye - bound to have upset the steering geometry", etc.

I declined the frills, agreed £120 for a new tyre and sat down to wait for the work to be done.

Every victim who came in whilst I was there got the same treatment and they each swallowed hard, and agreed. It was like watching a David Attenborough wild life documentary, where the snake is about to devour the mouse. Must happen daily throughout the country.

Caveat emptor!
