This is the advert for our car

Well this is the ad we have put in Auto Trader to sell our beautiful Mercedes. I'm still not sure if we are doing the right thing as I really love this car, but we are trying to be sensible and realise that there is no point in running two expensive cars.

Would appreciate any feedback from the ad as it's the first time we have tried to sell a car privately and it's not easy to know what to put or what price to ask.

Makes me a bit sick to think I just paid that much for a Honda Jazz for Mrs R.

You seem to have preserved it, rather than used it Lyn. A great buy for some lucky person.

Price is just a function of what you are prepared to ask and what someone is prepared to pay. Even for a pristine , ultra low mileage car there is a ceiling on what people are prepared to pay. There is no point in overpricing and failing to sell.

I think you are offering a proposition which should sell readily. The ad says price reduced. What was the price previously?

Currently you are priced at the What Car "Trade" figure on what car, and well below dealer pricing, as I am sure you know. This probably reflects people's reluctance to buy privately and forego all the assurances of a dealer sourced car. Someone with a bit more gumption will get a good deal - or a dealer will give you the money and still make a margin.

Good luck.

We only advertised the car yesterday and our price then was £14,750, which I thought was a bit high with it being a private sale. I guess the main reason we reduced the price was because it's so near to Christmas and we are also aware that a lot of people prefer to trade their cars in rather than buy and sell privately, after all it's a big chunk of money.

On the plus side, as you so rightly point out, if someone does buy the car they will definately get it at a good price and it still has 7mths of warranty left, which is more than a lot of traders give you when you buy a car from them. We paid cash for our Porsche and got that at a good price as it was being sold privately too, but we were in the fortunate position of having that amount of cash to hand and didn't have a car to trade in to be able to buy it.

We aren't in any real hurry to sell the car from a financial point of view. I have used my own savings to pay off the finance and as interest rates are so low right now I'm not really that bothered about my money being tied up in the car for a while. However we are also aware that cars depreciate all the time and obviously the longer the car is up for sale the less it's worth

Just to add further to your doubts, why would you want to sell that? Is the porker going to be the only car? Where are you going to put the shopping? What are you going to use to get to the meets on here?
If you are replacing the Merc with a cheaper car will it really work out cheaper in the long run bearing in mind the hit you're taking with depreciation if you sell now?
I'm not sure about the 'Price reduced' bit. It adds a desperate tone to the ad, as if you'd been trying to sell for some time. It wouldn't stop me from haggling either.

Yes the Porsche will be our only car. We get our groceries delivered so we don't have to worry about where to put shopping. Also the Porsche has a lot of space in the front and back to put things.

Last time we went to a meet we had sold our first Merc and had a Golf V5 and went in that, no one seemed to notice ;)

I will take off the 'reduced price' bit on the ad so that no one is aware of the price reduction.

To be honest I'm really not sure if we are doing the right thing in selling the car. We both love the Porsche though and have become total converts to convertibles, but with hindsight perhaps we should have traded the Merc in when we had the spare cash to buy the Porsche and we would have been able to buy a nice CLK :(

I really like the artico, I think it's actually better than real leather as it doesn't stretch and go all saggy :D

We've had 2 calls about the car today. Both callers decided not to come and look at the car because the last service was done by an indie. Does it really make so much difference, surely a service is a service

What some people don't realise is that an indie will often do a better job than the main dealer.

Hi Lyn,

That is interesting. I have bought and sold lots of cars over the years and nobody, not even dealers receiving trade ins, has ever looked at the service history. Now you encounter 2 out of 2?

Yes and one was a Mercedes dealer and the other buys cars and sells them on, so both basically traders

Wow Lyn that is one nice example your selling there. I would think your price is perhaps a tad low but on the positive side 'at the right price to sell' I suppose the Full MB Service is important to those who read the motoring mags and have no real knowledge of what 'indie' service really means, however you could always answer that question by saying "well it is priced to reflect that and don't forget sir/madam or thing that it still has the MB Warranty"

Yes it's a really lovely car. I know I'm going to miss having the Merc, I'm just trying to be 'sensible' and I hate being sensible, it's so ****** boring :(

Looks a very nice example.

I really do not get why they were being funny about not having full MB history, most cars have done double the mileage yours has before their first service.

Very true. 15,500 or 2 years prior to 2007, so this car is one of the first to be caught on "annual servicing", and we have yet to be convinced of the merits of that change, given that similar cars until then were fine on a 2 year interval - which is itself arbitrary.

Perhaps they wanted to use servicing history as a bargaining point? There can be little else to haggle on at 7,800 miles!
