I always found the design of the R a bit odd, a sleek aerodynamic body jacked up (obviously to provide more suspension travel) will always look peculiar to my eyes

I would like to have justified a R500 but ......

I looked at an R500, but it had lots of problems (through neglect, not the car) - bits broken, dirty (even though I'd phoned in advance so they'd had all day to prep it) CD player missing (but wires hanging out), windows that wound down but not up etc. On top of that, the garage wanted to charge me £30 for a test drive (which they'd refund if I bought it)!!

Jog on I told them. Shame though, would have been an interesting drive.

Jog on would have been the least I'd have told them ..... :D

Well judging on the mpg I’m getting from the M113 5.0 in my 215, I’m guessing there’s little real difference between an R320 CDI and an R500...

They were definitely designed for the States I think, and probably stack up pretty well against the competition there, but in the UK (and probably most of Europe) it was really a car without a market. :)

Not only designed for the US, but built there as well. Early examples had a lot of problems due to US build quality or lack of. Did not sell well there either, and sold even less in Canada. Mercedes appear to have invented a segment in the market that never existed, and still doesn't!

Oh it exists. It’s an odd peculiarly American one, grand touring minivan. Chevy Suburban, Chrysler Grand Tourer were the main competitors, but both quite a bit bigger than the 251.

The segment Mercedes were aiming for didn't exist, unlike the ones you've mentioned, the R Class was supposed to a 4x4 and a luxury limo as well as the grand touring minivan like the rest. Too many things, no one was fooled.

Apparently they're very popular in China and were still being exported there as late as 2017!
