After a combination of five recent visits to my main dealer for a service, park assist issue, software updates, etc and short journeys there and back, my radiator fan was overrunning after every journey for 20 minutes or more. They (MB) diagnosed that the GPF was clogged and needed a static/forced regeneration, which they carried out.

However, after picking the car up the overrun persisted for 10 to 15 minutes after each journey.

So, over the following 3 days, I drove the car for 65 miles in sport mode and the fan now stops immediately when the ignition is turned off…regeneration complete? Fingers crossed.

I think maybe these cars need an “Italian Tune-up” now and again.
Well, it looks like I spoke too soon, the fan overrun has started again but now overruns intermittently, rather than permanently.
The dealer has done all they could to rectify the fault so now they have the car back for three days to have the fault diagnosed remotely.

There’s an area between Gloucester and Bristol next to the M5 that has been sold off by the land owners for someone to build a mini town with schools and a hospital with 5000 houses. That is going to be powered by the Rolls Royce mini nuclear. Was told this about 3 years ago. The chap who told me is good friends with someone at RR but was sworn to secrecy until it came into the public domain.

Oh and how did this thread go from looking at an AMG 53 to nuclear power.
The E53 is a very quick hybrid, who knows maybe will end up with a nuclear reactor under the bonnet powering the electric motor!

I had the SRPC 2233 Transmission Wiring Harness Recall fitted on 08/11/2024 together with the necessary CPC-NG software update on all the modules. This software updated the Power Train Control which in turn changed the characteristics of the radiator fan causing it to overrun between 12 and 19 minutes after the ignition is switched off.

This CPC-NG software update is meant to maintain the engine compartment temperature below 110° C whilst driving and after the ignition is turned off to cool any residual heat.

The E53 went in for the recall yesterday MB didn’t finish the new wiring harness and software update on the car until 5pm so went over to pick it up this morning. All seemed well on the drive back home and no fan run-on when parked up on the drive.

They also printed out the full service history for me which was kind of them. The only additional work other than the standard oil and filter changes was spark plugs replaced at 30k miles. The oil across the 5 services ranged from 229.5, 229.5, 229.51,229,51 to 229.72 so quite a variation.

Interestingly the courtesy car for the day/morning was a 74 plate EQC which I was very impressed with not the highest spec but ok but no where near as good a cabin as the premium plus. I think MB are trying (quite cleverly) to coax us all into EVs it certainly made me think about it, it drives well and of course the high seating position suits ingress/egress for the ‘older generation’.

Malcolm. Can you do me a favour and ask your son if he has a compressor and tyre gunk in his EQC. Mine went back last Friday and the BAC report said it was missing in mine and the thing is in all the 4 years I’ve had it I’ve never had a puncture and when I’ve needed air I’ve got my own compressor so never looked under the covers. Even the folding shopping baskets and bags were still packaged up.
Cheers Ian

Thanks for that Malcolm. I’ll see if they charge me for it. Gunk i would say no as its a consumable but the compressor about £500 :)

That’s a lot for a compressor I would have thought <£150.

I was informed by MB at my last service that the gunk had 3 months expiry on it however I’ve acquired a spacesaver spare so headed that one off next service

Malcolm that was me being sarcastic about the compressor. It was never there to start with or someone lifted it from Mercedes as the car only went there. Hope it’s the former.

I’ve had the E53 for a year now and overall I’m very happy with the car other than something that’s been bugging me for months but haven’t had the time to resolve. Some of the rear trim in the estate load compartment rattles about especially with the not so road friendly runflat tyres detecting every irregularity on the road surface and resonating through the car.

So, I inspected the rear compartment interior trim and found the detachable fuse box cover trim had plastic to plastic contact around the edges (hence the rattle) and the hinged floor cover again sat on a plastic ledge. To remedy this I bought some 3mm thick rubber foam tape and applied it to all the contact areas so will see how that helps hopefully it will do the job.

I can’t help but think the MB are cheapening off the areas that once would have been covered with boot lining fabric I’ve never had this problem on the S124, S210 and S212.

Another thing that I couldn’t quite get my head around was why MB fitted a thick carpet mat in the rear load compartment it just seemed unnecessary. My conclusion on this as I took the mat out 6 months ago and used a load liner to protect the cargo area is that there is quite a lot of road noise from that area and to put it simply MB have used the mat as sound deadening.

Good information, thanks for posting that Malcolm

All convertibles are known to rattle (according to my old non merc mechanic) but my left door trim rattles like hell, I found that if I apply pressure to the door handle area during driving rattle stops, so looking for a good interior trimmer to remove the door card and investigate. I am guessing an aftermarket stereo fitter would be ideal as they have all the tools to access speakers etc and would be much more experienced than the stealership....

Well over a year into ownership of the E53 now and it’s interesting to compare forecourt prices then and now to see what kind of depreciation the car has been subject to. I paid £36.5k for the estate and have only covered a 2k miles so the odometer reads 44.5k so that doesn’t really factor into the residual value equation so looking at the cars currently on sale if I were to sell back to a retailer the car would be put back up for sale at approximately the same price I paid for it.

I can only put this down to rarity the fact that EVs aren’t selling well and there hasn’t been as many petrol engined cars registered over the last couple of years. Not inclined to sell as the car does everything I want and there is nothing out there that betters it other than an E63 which although appealing isn’t worth the premium to me personally

I have no idea where the prices of these cars will be in a couple of years time but I don’t see things changing that much mileage seems to be the main depreciating factor at the moment and the astronomical cost of new cars are keeping residual prices high.

Speaking of EV prices, this is shocking

I just tried to open the bonnet, but the lever was hanging loose so I took it to the dealer who fixed it in 5 minutes; the cable had come off the catch.
