Hi there,

I am Hopeful's daughter, kindly being allowed to drive dads MB CLK Coup 2.7
I am looking for my own MB and have seen a 2006 E220 CDI automatic. Just wondering what your thoughts are on this model as i know that there were a few issues with the 2000-2004 models?

Thanks :)

Hello and welcome

When in 2006? There was a facelift late 2006 and the later ones are betterer - not having SBC (Sensonic Brake Control) is a major benefit.

The 220 cdi engine is very good and the 7g box is ok if a bit jerky at times - gearbox oil change should be every 40k - check if it’s been done.

2006 Mercedes E220 CDI Auto Diesel
Date registered 2 March 2006

I have a feeling that car may have SBC braking. (I have it, and its great, but must be treated as an eventual replacement like discs and pads)
Cars registered after 23rd March 2006 are liable to the higher rate of road tax, so that car falls in the lower band.

If you post up either the Reg# or the Vin#, a datacard can be produced showing all the options that were fitted when the car was built.

C class probably less risky as no SBC - handbrake not so much of an issue (if you’re mechanically skilled) lots of car for less than £1,000

Yes c class a bit cheaper to run. E220CDI 211 will have 5g box which nice and reliable. Be good to check the gearbox oil as I do still see a few with glycol contamination.

SBC brakes can be an issue. Budget 700-1100 to sort if the pump does run out of life, or check its been done in the past.

Which is why it’s less than £1,000...

I had a CLK270CDI 2006 a great car very reliable, would go for ever, but the design is quite old.
The E220 is a much bigger car more modern engine, but not a quick as the 270 in CLK guise.

What you have to consider is what you are going to do when the first big job requires doing on the car or suddenly a cheap (to buy) car suddenly becomes an expensive old car to run. Some of the potential costs: Auto gearbox electric plate replacement £450 or just an oil service £200, SBC replacement pump £1000, brake pads and discs replacement all round £300 and so the list goes on. You might be lucky and not have to pick up any of these costs in the first year especially if you do your homework and check out each cars service history. Just remember a neglected MB can end up being a money pit so you either need to know what to look for or take someone with you who does.

The good thing is that you have asked for advice on here before buying.

The 220cdi engine will do big miles if properly serviced so you are choosing the right power plant. I would go with the E220 with a year’s MoT, check what history there is on the SBC braking system the pump will have probably been replaced by now, also check the history of the auto box bearing in mind the above costs.

Good luck and there are plenty out there so take your time and you will find a well cared for car probably owned by an enthusiast
