Hi all,

Well, my E320CDi is now 10 years old. I liove it and at the risk of tempting fate, it's got everything I need and everything works as it should.

It has been serviced every year (as it has never done enough miles to trigger an earlier service) and the service book is now full. Mileage currently 89,000.

My question is, given the age of the car, its likely resale value and the fact that i barely do 7,000 per year; should I continue to have it serviced annually or leve it for 2 years?

Any thoughts?

Regards

Steve

The potential on cost of leaving it for two years is..? That’s what you need to consider.

I get mine done annually at same time as MOT even though I do fewer than 2000 miles per annum on each car.

Two years will be fine with only 7000 mile per annum.

You can always rely on Nariac for a bit of common sense, that is exactly what I do with mine. I also only cover 5 to 6000 miles per annum. :)

Mine is on the older Assyt and seems to indicate a service due around every 18 months by which time I have done around 6/7k miles.

I'd oil change every year (get rid of the acids that build up in the oil) and then do the rest on the normal mileage schedule

What's a service anyway?

Boils down to an oil change and "a bit of a look-round".

Just do an annual oil change and let the MOT pick up the rest...

Thanks for all the replies. Some food for thought.

On one hand I feel like the car owes me nothing so throwing a few quid at a service each year isn't too much to ask. On the other hand changing air/fuel filters after just 7k seems slightly wasteful.

Couldn’t agree more that’s what I’m doing with my low mileage cars oil and filter change biannually and the rest when mileage is due, otherwise a terrible waste of resource and money

Annually and a Transmission oil change every 4/5 years.

Oil and filter change is just another form of insurance. Annually makes sense.
Hang the rest - just replace as needed. Same as tyres, brake pads, drop links, and other fast change obvious wear items.

I've got pretty much the same car , same age/mileage and had all these questions a couple of years ago . I have started doing all servicing myself , because as you pointed out the cars getting on , the value is just above " chump change " .
I don't know if you are capable/willing to do any bits yourself , but have a read up on the Pela 6000 oil change pump and do another search on eBay for the 20L 229.51 MB oil , which is £53 delivered . An oil filter will cost you £10 from MB . Air filters are £35 and pretty easy to change and would last 4 years , same as fuel filter , easy change (£29-70 for MB one depending on wether there is a sensor ) .
I would change the oil yearly with the Pela , because the 20L oil makes it so cheap , why wouldn't you .

When dealing with low value cars the way I look at it is "What will it cost me to change it and fix the unknown issues in the next one as opposed to fixing this one?" and "How much use is this car to me?"

Invariably its better to keep a car and spend the money to repair rather than take the risk on an unknown vehicle and the associated costs of actually going to find it and collect it.

Well Steve,

Like yours, my car (S203 C Esate Avantgarde) just passed its tenth birthday. Since I've had it I've loved it and I echo your comments that it's got everything I need and everything works as it should... It drives like a new car with no rattles or squeaks and it has a "gunsight" star on the bonnet through which I can shoot morons who've upset me (yup, I wish...).
-
Until Christmas it never, ever let me down then I had an unexpected non starting situation... One new MB premium battery later and now it starts first time every time again. Then the transmission warning icon lit up and limp mode took over... cutting that story short, the Northampton indy, Mercland sorted that out - they found a broken "boost" pipe and replaced it - it only cost around £135.

Mine is on ASSYST and I use a superb, helpful local garage who can read the STAR messages etc and my services cost a lost less than having a free coffee at the Merc Stealership and I use the indy above for anything they can't do (recently they did my transmission service, for example). I usually get the service done earlier than the indicator suggests because as my mileage and overall speed continues to drop (along with our increasing ages!) I figure an earlier oil change is beneficial.

Going for an upgrade now would doubtless cost me several limbs (I can hear the salesman telling me it's not worth anything) so what the heck do I need to do that for ? - she has been good and faithful since the start so she can carry on and like SWMBO we'll take care of each other!
