Dear Members,

I purchased a Demonstrator C320 Avantgarde SE CDi (W203) from a local MB dealer in Sept last year. In the 5,000mls I have driven the car it has been plagued by a loud ticking noise inside the cabin. The noise is present both when driving at any speed and at tickover. If you touch the brake pedal the noise stops for a little while and then returns. I had an "A" service today at MB, and they want to have the car in for a couple of days to find out what is causing this.

Has anyone experienced anything like this before or have any idea what it might be???

On another note can anyone tell me whether the area around the interior light switch and Headlamp load adjuster is illuminated??. MB says not, but I am sure that it was on my previous C200K pre facelift.

Sounds like the ticking noise may be the vacuum pump to the servo unit or the servo unit itself. Have heard of this before, never actually done one or seen one do it. Should be pretty easy for a retailer to diagnose and fix.

Should be covered by warranty, if not the vacuum pump and or servo is very expensive.

I have had loads of 203's over the last few years and I am pretty sure that my overhead control panels had illumination. In fact my last 203 had an LED fitted below the mirror that lit up the centre console at night, I thought this was a nice touch.

Headlamp adjustment switches don't have illumination, if they do then I have had 14 defective 203's.

Surround Lighting.

Thanks for the information regarding the ticking noise my C320 CDi.

I didn't make it clear which switch was not illuminated (trying saying that after a few beers!!). I was refering to the light switch which controls the headlights, sidelights and turns on the fog lights. I know that most of us leave it in the "Auto" position, but I noticed that while the switch has a light there is no lighting around it, so you cannot see to what position/point you are turning the switch.

My local MB dealer says that there is no surround lighting, but as I said I thought there was on my previous C class.

Can anyone enlighten me.

ticking

I had a similar ticking noise on my c sport, was very quiet though.

the servo was changed under warranty as there are valves etc inside, which were causing the problem.

this was a couple of years ago though

Paulopt,

It is the brake servo ... intermittent rapid ticking noise from in front of the steering wheel (or so it sounds). Should be a warranty job.

Re the illumination of the headlamp switch, my facelifted C-class (54 plate) doesn't have any.

My late 04 (facelift) C Class doesn't have lighting around the switch.

I'm slightly baffled by your point - if it was dark, you'd be able to see where you'd moved the switch based on what the outside lights where doing! Although I suppose you wouldn't know in the dark, without moving the switch, whether it was set to Auto or headlamps on.
I never use Auto. I don't like the way the lights can come on unexpectedly - that's a recipe for having someone pull out in front of you.
