Hello, this is my first post on this forum, hope you can help, I've owned a 'c' class 220 cdi '54' plate for 3 months now and I can hear a faint 'ticking' on the drivers side under the dashboard, somewhere where your knees are situated when you are driving the car, I first thought it was a stone caught in the tread of the tyre but the noise still sounds when it is at standstill, it is not loud enough to be that distracting but anyone with any ideas would be much appreciated, many thanks.

Hello, have you tried listening with the bonnet open, in case its and injector blowing, ticking. Can you hear it from outside the car, is it speed related or engine speed related or just constant??

I cant think of anything in the drivers underdash area that would cause i ticking as you describe.

Strange 'ticking' sound

Hi

I assume the 'ticking' is present only when the engine is running regardless of whether the car is in motion? In that case take a look under the bonnet.

Had the bonnet up, can't hear no ticking noise in engine bay, also the noise is constant, it doesn't get any faster as the engine revs higher or when the car moves faster, also what I didn't point out in the first thread when you first start the car up it's ok, when it's warmed up is when the ticking starts, thanks.

To see if there is an electrical source to the ticking, try removing different fuses to see if the sounds stops, when certain fuses are removed, the heating system would be a good place to start.

Are there any suspicious digital clocks in the car which are counting down?

My E class has a noisy fan for the climate control. Does it continue if you switch-off the heating & ventilation system? My independent has tried lubricating the bearings on the motor but apparently it needs replaced :(

yes hers still makes the noise as soon as the speedo lights up no heating or ventilation turned on you dont even need to start the engine for it to happen but as i say it stops within 2mins, 100 yrds from moving off.

It could be the dash expanding an shrinking with heat and air con, my does it sometimes, try turing your fan off.

I think our W209 CLK 2003 has a similar noise. In our case it is on the passenger side and is quite a loud rhythmic tick / clack that occurs when the ignition is turned on or soon after starting the car. The noise lasts for a minute or two. We asked the dealer who supplied the car - he had heard the noise and had the indie Merc garage who serviced it check it out. They said that they didn't know what it was but it doesn't happen if the Activated Filter button is on.

This doesn't sound right to me, so any suggestions?

2003 CLK with Same ticking as described

In my case it happens when ignition is turned of, sounds as though it is coming from behind the radio? Again doesnt seem to be affecting the cars performance in any way. Still i would like to know what it is... within warranty!

You have a problem with the stepper motors which move the flaps or the heater system, they are common to break and give noises on the lk 209 and 203 c-class.

The stepper motors or gogs which they move have broken, depending on which motor or flap is broken, makes how much work is envolved in fixing it. sometimes just radio etc to come out, others the entire dash and heater box has to come out. Get it sorted under warranty as it will be a long expensive job out of warranty.

Agree with the above. Had this problem on my CLK but noticed it when I was buying the car so the dealer fixed before I took delivery. It was a dash out job. Looked very scary when I saw it but it all works fine now.

I have had this on my Jeep CRD which is high percent Merc.
It turned out to be the heater blend doors. my Merc C320 is doing it as well, I will be looking for that fault, its behind the radio at the top of the dash some where.
I will post my results.
