Hello and welcome

If its got a belt it will need changing a lot sooner than if its fitted with a chain.

But at least with the OM651, and unlike the ill-fated BMW N47 chains, it will give a warning before it finally got breaks, a rattling noise for a few seconds after starting. Plus as far as I know, the chain / sprockets and tensioners can be checked in-situ.

Yup chain can be done in situ. Not particularly easy. Bad gears, visable ones and it's motor out 20 Yr ago and that would be 2,3 hr job with relative ease. Progress pah!!!
