Timing belt w210

Hi all......i'm new but on my 2nd merc....bought a '97 e200 elegance last week..68k on the clock and full MB history up to 57k....not sure if the timing belt has been changed but it does look a bit old, any ideas on when these are due for a change?.....Generally happy with the car but it has disconcerting rust issues around wheel arches , front wings and drivers door.....from looking at previous threads on here it appears to be a general problem with the e-class...dont think MB will entertain me with the rust as it hasn't been to an authorised service dealer since July 03.

'Timing belt'

Hi and welcome.

You don't have a timing belt on your car, this is all done by a very strong internal 'duplex' chain, which can last the life of the engine. What you are seeing is simply a drive belt for your ancillaries (often erroneously called the 'fan belt!). If it breaks the only problem you'd have is the inconvenience - won't harm your engine. (Provided you don't run without it of course).
There is plenty of info on changing this if you do a search on 'drive belt', it can be a bit tricky with so many pulleys, but not difficult.

Your fan belt is one of the better parts of the E class as it doesn't rust.
