Is it the original chain or a replacement. I have heard of the split link in replacement chains not being installed correctly which causes the link to disintergrate.
Yes intersting post. my W202 C180 Elegance 1998 August, had just done 100,000 miles, I was paranoid that while ploughing the M4 the chain might snap, and bye bye engine. Well from various feedbacks from this board, and taking the car to an Independent (K & S Motors Morden Surrey), was reassured that the chain and tensioners are fine. As these are double chains, could be aftermarket chain not installed right.
I have heard of a couple of vehicles where the chain have snapped (assuming the vehicle has a 111 or 104 engine fitted.) Other than that I would suspect that if the cyl head has removed. Then they havn't set the timing chain tensioner up correctly.
