timing chain change?

you hear a lot talked about when one should change the chain, i have a 1990 420sel just got it so i suppose this is an enquiry more than anything, its just slipped smoothly over 100k, runs great, no noise when starting, i suppose i just want the forums thoughts?

You will have a duplex chain on that car and as SAM normally good for 150k,, they normally start to rattle on start up when getting near to the end of their life.

You could measure say in 20k miles time to see if it has stretched

whats the interval for my chain? how do you check if theyre ok? just listen for them rattling?

Yes, you have a hydraulic adjuster which takes the slack up, thats what people forget to reset when working on these lumps!! then snap the cam heads off etc!!

2 to 3 hours I would say,,it depends on the engine very much,,single or twin cam

on the 116/117 engines the thing to beware of is broken guide rails. removing the cam covers allows access to the three that break the most. on the older iron block 350 and 450 motors the tensioners can also give trouble, causing broken guide rails. otherwise chain wear as such is not a big issue, and on most models (excluding pre duplex 102 series) cam chains can be left for good.
