Hi everyone, just joined to passing advice about timing chain.

I've had 7 MB, latest car a 2012 Eclass that I had for the last 3 years from 37k, now at 153K.

Broke down last night, car just died. Turns out that timing chain snapped and came out through the back of the engine. I've not noticed any odd noise from the engine, no rattles, nothing, car had been running normally.

MB advise me that the timing chain should last the life of the car. My advice would be to change the timing chain as garage advises I now have £13000 worth of damage. Gutted as this could have been avoided.

Hopefully, this will help someone make a right decision if there's any concern about whether to renew a timing chain. Cheers for now.

Generally the timing chain will rattle on start up and especially after an oil change, they rarely just snap. It a shame it wasn’t picked up on. Sorry it’s not good news.
Mercedes gave you the wrong info, the chains on a 651 engine can start to rattle from 75k.

same as emilysdad . plenty of change left over from good used engine change just make sure you see a guage reading cold, warm, oil press and you ear it running before you part with yr cash. unless yr financially nicking it. and can live with an overhaul cost ,

Yeah its known that OM651 has 'weakest' timing chain in MB diesels (lets forget OM628 which has ridiculously long chain, wonder how they managed to improve it in OM629) plus PITA to change because location in back of block. Similar 'feeble chain' is found in M271 gasolines. OM642 chains will stretch but rarely snaps.

No warning. Spoke to MB again today and was advised the same, it should last the car. I'm wondering about multiple start stops in cold weather?

Hi Paul, welcome to the forum. What a blow, I'm very surprised that there were no indicators before this happened. I feel your servicing supplier has failed you there, surely them as experts should have heard a bell ring, so to speak. I'm shocked and surprised

Every service made on schedule and twice changed oil inbeteeen services. But there was no warning and I'd only started the car about 2 or 3 minutes before moving off, reached about 20mph and the car just died. AA thought it was the battery at first. Then we saw this: image shows chunk of metal and oil at side of engine.

Everyone has cold starts , and in the winter it's only the first start of the day that's cold . It would take hours for the engine to go back to cold .

I’m still think stop/start/eco technology adds to timing chain wear by the constant snatching on engine start and stoppping.

agreed with this. It does seem to be common on cars with stop start or those used for shorter trips (rather than pounding up and down the motorway etc, regardless of annual mileage)

I did soon after the I bought the car, it’s a faff turning it off every journey though wish I could turn it off permanently
Agreed! Although to be honest my daily work journey consisted of leaving on Eco through the village then into sport on the M53 then back to Eco at the other end the village where my works are...I’ll just stick it in sport from the beginning now and leave it

I would be thinking I needed a beefed up chain/belt in my stop start enabled engine but then I don't design engines for MB and report to their bean counters.
