hi all,im having to change the timing chain on my c200 kompas i think there must be too much wear in it,does anybody know what is the correct chain link/riveter to use? i have looked on ebay and they all seem to be for motorbikes or push bikes, im guessing a cycle one wont be apt but also was thinking the chain wont be as wide as one on a motor bike? i was thinking to get mb to join the chain and then fitting it myself taking the whole front cover off but having read that it involves dropping the sump id rather not, been a novice and having just removed the head to replace the inlet valves i dont want to push my luck ,this job is going on an on

il have to bob out tomorrow to see if i can borrow one,im getting on good terms with the MB dealers in sunderland, them good lads in parts have given me a good discount, must be all the bits im buying,il try to see if they can get one from the shop floor for me for a couple of hours, seems pointless buying one for a one off job il bet they are in the £50 mark, i just hope ive not damaged the valves by turning it by hand as ive just replaced them and did not have a jolly time doing it,was a bigger lob than i thought, saying that it has given me confidence to do a lot more of my own repairs.

Timing Chain Mileage

For the benefit of the experts on this board, I wonder if you could take time to post some details of the events that led to you needing to change the timing chain, including what mileage the engine had done before the problem became obvious.

I just thought it might help to build up a bit of a picture of what might happen to these engines as they get older, as well as the fact that there seems to be a few with timing / timing chain problems at the moment.

Hope you manage to get it sorted out though.

Many thanks,

Ernie

i think podmo bought the car like this, but didn't know about the timing problem. i count 3x now on the forums that have claimed slipped valve timing on the 271.

yes i did buy the car like this, been a slow process getting it up and running with it been outdoors and wet,im hoping to have it running verry soon, having been to MB and asking to lend a chain riveter with a 100 pound deposit, which is the price to replace they said no but with the car engine been in a ready state to replace the chain i.e all the covers off and starter motor so the tensioner ready to get to,i have got it booked into MB just to replace the chain and time it up ,they said should only take a half hour to an hour, so should only cost £45 to do.they said chances are even if i had the tool i would probably balls it up as on the 271 engine its a bugger to do, so rather than say pay £50 for a tool that i would just use the once it seems the right way to go, then all been well and fingers and toes crossed when i bolt on all the bits it will fire up, while i am here, the chap in the parts store said that they have only ever had one bent valves failer on a c200 komp and that was due to it driving through flood water, sucked water up or something, im finding this very hard to believe.

got the chain put on at MB wow the 30 min labour shot to an hour so they charged me 100 pound after 10% discount, thought there was no harm in asking(every penny helps) anyhow they timed it up nice for me so started to bolt it all back up today, not sure if the alternater is upside down or not yet as it will bolt on both ways. seems from mr MB forman face that there has been plenty of these streched chains in the c200 but they wont admit it,he knew what was wrong with mine before he lifted the bonnet.

the mileage is only 57000 malcolm and is genuine, this is why i thought the chain would be the last cause of the problem as merc chains are meant to last well beyond this with them been a better quality than say a corsa chain.i have my sons this weekend so looks like it will be monday when i get it fired up

That is nothing at 57k , I remember in the early days of this 271 where the valve seats cracked and MB tried to pass the fault off as a user fault. This is all so sad when you spend your hard earned cash on what you believe is a good car, and it ends up like this.

Its like my car,,4 struts in 40k miles at £6k some of the faults are free in the USA under the lemon law, and here we get söd all

yes its not right is it,you pay a premium to drive a higher end car for the build quality thinking it will be more reliable in the long run and you end up with premature reliability faults, i bought this c200 thinking id swap it for my 2.5 dti audi but now im not so sure, i drive a 300 mile round trip twice every other weekend to pick my sons up and need to know i can get there without been stranded. i must say my audi has never let me down and i get 600 miles to a tank on the motorway. im now thinking of selling them both and getting an s class diesel as the merc engines are meant to be fantasic?

One of the models also has timing chain problems so do check on that first to get the right engine
