Can anyone help , my timing chain tensioner has unthreaded itself and stiffed my engine . I have read a few of the forums here and it seems a few people have had the same problem . No one seems to be willing to admit to a problem with the vehicle and I’m struggling to get any joy from dealers regarding this problem . Has anyone had any joy actually being able to claim against a merc dealer for this fault ,

Hello and welcome

Its ~7 years old, so 4 years out of warranty (unless you bought it recently and has some form of warranty form the seller). So unlikely that Mercedes will take any responsibility unfortunately

I took out an extended warranty with the dealer which runs out next month , but only covers upto 3k for repairs, but at no point did they mention this . From what I’ve read there may have been a recall for the chain tensioner as Mercedes reduced it to 60nm from 80nm and then put it back to 80nm after some problems occurred , but Mercedes only notified there corporate customers of this problem .

There was a recall for this exact problem, and 2014 it’s very likely your car was affected and never repaired. I have saved one myself, 2014 E class. The oil comes out amazingly quickly. Just pure luck it got to me just in time. Your enquiry needs to start with checking if your car has any outstanding recalls pending…

So if there is a recall that was surpose to be done and never was , do I have any grounds to get this repaired .

It won’t be a walk in the park, but I think you have a chance. If it was recalled and the previous keeper didn’t get it done, due diligence by the dealer you bought it from should maybe have uncovered that fact. It won’t be easy, but definitely worth pursuing

Recalls are to prevent a known weak spot causing observed damage by having weak spot replaced with a superior part.

MB will simply say they informed the PO and no joy.

Not good news by any means, I've a 2014 E220 myself,so will be following this with interest. I hope that you will be successful in your attempt to get MB or the Dealarship to at least cover part of the costs. Whereabouts will the oil leak be?

My timing chain went on the newer e class. You're just unlucky and will have to fork out the costs.

Below is an excerpt from my 'Vehicle Information (Damage History)' report obtained from an MB dealership when I was investigating this very same recall after a previous post on this forum, it is the very first entry and as you can see the odo is only registering 5 Mls so I assume it was carried out as part of the pre-delivery checks for the first owner, check with your dealership whether the work has been carried out or not, at least you will know of a potential reason for the current failure.

In my experience MB have a habit of constantly reminding owners of outstanding recalls until completed, they're still reminding me regularly of the ECU 'Emissions Software Update' and have been doing since 2019!

The release date on my 2014 E class was 17.02.2014, and the affected models are listed as from 01,02,2014 to 30,11,2014. so datewise. I'm within the range. The affected VIDs are from WDC156 9051j 012374 to WDD246 2082j 296467. So I guess my WDD212 0022a 981951 falls some where in the middle? Or is it exempt as its the W212 model,,,,,???
And if the first hint of an impending seal / tensioner failure is an oil leak, where exactly would it show externally???

No , it was just serviced 2 days before and no leaks. It literally just went and dumped the oil out in seconds .
