Tired Bushes

Hi all
It would seem that I need to check/replace the rubber bushes on my E220cdi as I am starting to get a knocking sound when going over bumps! has anyone any advise on whether to go with Merc or after market parts, rough costings from an Indie to do the work and finally is it the sort of job I should contemplate myself (reasonably mechanically minded but starting to stiffen up. Its an age thing will soon be on cod liver oil tablets

Read the thread and think I will go with OEM parts as dont have access to a machine shop will post my moans and whinges if and when I finish the job.

Mike,

If you're going down the rubber bush route buy a tin of rubber grease from AP Products. It'll help the fitting exercise and help prevent the little nicks that occur when fitting rubber bushes. Also invest in a length of threaded stud (as large that will go thro' the bush) and 4 nuts to press in the new bush. when taking the old bush out don't waste time with a press - it will be well stuck and shear anyway. Burn it out with a blow torch, but clean the housing well with a rotary wire brush after.

My W124 E220 is also clunking and the diff bushes need replacing. Are there other bushes (apart from prop shaf doughnuts) that need doing at the same time. I sort of recollect someone saying something about sub frame bushes. Could I do the diff bushes myself (no hoist, only ramps)

I will take any and all advice I can get as it is a hell of a long time since I replaced a bush (I think I must be entering my second childhood) starting to mess about with cars again. God help me must be getting senile.
