Richard Hammond (Top Gear) in critical condition following crash - Richard Hammond from Top Gear has suffered serious head injuries following a crash filming for the show and is in critical condition in hospital.

From the BBC news website:

"Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond is in a critical condition in hospital after a crash in a jet-powered car while filming for the programme.
The presenter, 36, was taken by air ambulance to a Leeds hospital which has a special neurological unit.

A North Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesman said he was unconscious when they got to the scene but was regaining consciousness at the hospital.

A BBC spokesman confirmed the presenter had been injured during a shoot."

I hope he'll be ok, I'm sure he will. :S The show would loose something if he did die, critics would come down on it, and nothing would be as crazy and dangerous :(

top bloke - best wishes to him and his family.

I recently watched a re-run of him running with the bulls before test driving a lambo. Great TV I thought.

All our thoughts are with him. Top bloke and by all accounts, a genuinley nice family guy.

It brings it home how dangerous some of their stunts really are.
Watched him racing a Cayenne down a mountain, (outrunning a sky diver) tearing towards what looked like seriously dodgy cliff edges on gravelly surfaces at silly speeds. You assume it just 'looks' dodgy due to the camera angles - but by the apparent look of terror on his face at certain points during that film and following yesterdays incident, I'm not so sure.

I don't think he enjoyed that Porsche at all as he crashed into one of the film crew going back up the mountain after that race.
I really hope he comes through for his families sake first and foremost. What happens next will seriously affect Top Gear one way or the other.

Could he have blacked out?

I think this averages out at 2G, but somebody can work out the correct number.

Doubt it. He'd been doing lots of runs succesfully all day - this was alledgedly the last one of the day. At that speed, it just needs a bump, stone or sudden cross wind and you've had it.
The G forces did cause the injuries though. Apparently he only has a black eye, but I can only imagine the forces that his insides went through.
It's rather like that 70mph-concrete wall crash test they did on a smart. The car survived with the cabin basically intact, but the decellorometer showed that the apparently unharmed occupants would have died from internal injuries.

I know a nurosergeon and you are correct - the damage is done to the soft tissues around the brain caused by sudden and violent deceleration.

not due to a sudden deceleration with the new car i hope...................
Back to Richard - I hear JC told him he was in the hospital because he was a crap driver

Sadly i think the BBC will get a touch of the wobblies now with top gear i know that JC and the H&SE have a constant war going on JC calls them the "program stoppers" or something similar and probably unprintable.

Watching question time last night 'somehow' they managed to link 'the accident' with 'reality TV' OWELL The only possible link i can see is that BIGBRUTHER will breath down the neck of the Top Gear Producers and we will get a crap PC correct bland program.

Wishing Richard all the best - i also heard that it was a last minute swap with James that had Richard driving this plane without wings - i can understand that swap as before when James was flying in a race from the south of France to London he lost to JC in an Aston (i think) when he 'had to go round the alps' not over or through them H&SE at work here methinks and then he had to land before he crossed the channel as it was getting dark - seems strange and a fix as you can fly VFR at night perfectly legally. I guess JC HAD to win smells of Ferrari/Schummie stuff - and yes i am a BIG FAN of both Ferrari and MS

Yes, the relationship between brain injury and velocity is not a perfect correlation but given that a 15mph accident generates approximately 10G of force on the head, the potential for a significant brain injury in this case is clear.

Unfortunately, brain tissue was not designed with sudden deceleration in mind and even in the absence of actual head impact, a significant brain injury with permanent deficits can ensue.

Love the Sun report, just printed it for the rest of the family.

We prayed for the Hampster and family in Church this morning, although using his more formal name. I suspect that MrsC and I were the only ones that knew who he is, that said I think he had at least an Angel helping him to survive such a terrible accident.
