Been that route in 1992 but in reverse. They don't have to cross the Golden bridge to get to I 50 and use Oakland bridge instead. The Golden Bridge crossing is for asthetic.

When I was there during Xmas/New Year time, the salts was soaking wet like mud. The I 50 is the most boring drive, featureless. A good experience though.

Me and the Mrs want to do a trans America drive next year. She wants to do it on a Harley but I am tempted by that Vette from last night.

we did R66 from Arizona to Nevada

in a Mitsubishi Eclipse Convertible one February, and that was ok as well. The Canyon was nice under a foot of snow. Nearly being bundled off the road by a snowplough wasn't though.

I80 and I50 are boring. Highway 101 is recommended. When it comes to Eureka it becoming weird, there is a volcanic area where they generate electric and it calls Hell and at Gerberville, they grow the 5 leaves.

That gesture is only understood in UK. The US policeman had got a clue except to indicate the figure of one.

Last year at work, I raised my first finger to indicate the figure one, someone pointed it rude. Funny here in UK, it so submissive and narrow minded you can't do this or that. In US althought there are a lot of Irish and British migrants settlers over the years they are more broadminded. Same as some of the women here in UK.
