I'm just starting to 'top-up' things on my new baby,,,,, and was wondering if I really need to use Mercedes Brands of Coolant,,,, Screen wash etc etc ?

Don't get me wrong, if I do, then so be it. But I rekkon there will be as good products out there that some of you use,,,, at a better cost.

SCREENWASH:
In my last E220 (124) I used a main brand for a few years,,,, then all of a sudden there was a blockage. I assumed a bit of crap in the nozzle/s,,, but pon closer inspection, the whole system was clogged up with slimy 'scum'. Inside the reservoir were bits of blue film floating about, a a bluey slime on the inside walls. I had to strip the lot out a wash it thoroughly, to get rid.

I stopped using screenwash then, & returned to a couple of drops of washing up liquid.

Is there a screenwash out there (MB or otherwise) that (i) does the job, (ii) dosn't make slime ?

COOLANT:
Again, I want a coolant which does the job (& well) but not necessarily MB brand,,,,,,, unless this really is the best !?!?

EXTINGUISHER:
As mine didn't cum with one, is there a specific model that I need to look for,,,, or "anything that will fit" ?

cheers all

Omega ---You know what its like yourself from your long term MB ownership and use of genuine parts is always best in the long run ?
On a car that must cost the best part of £20k --you dont spoil it and scrimp on coolant and screenwash ?

the slime is caused by stagnant water, much the same way as it builds up in a garden pond! easiest way to avoid it is to ignore the low screenwash fluid warning light and run the bottle till its dry occasionally. this has always worked for me! this problem is more common on newer cars as they have larger screenwash bottles to allow less frequent topping up, so as a result, the water is in the bottle longer!

There is a need to take some care - the wrong fuild can, and does, rot the rubber parts in the washer system. It's not the end of the world, but, it's a hassle you avoid if you use the MB screenwash.

Washing up liquid in the screen washer bottle eventually blocks up the jets, the cleaner of choice was always clean water and some methylated spirits added to clean the system..also acted as an antifreeze in winter.. but best to use the Mb or a quality screenwash.. some people aslo use the baby bottle cleaning fluid Milton.. tho its said u do have to burp it from time to time

Cheers folks,,,, I take all your points.

It's not that I want to scrimp on her,,, but neither do I want to by 'the' brand, just cause they want to make more money,,,, especially if it's the same stuff as badged by others.

Neither do I want to strip out the screenwash tank,,,, as my first viewing of it,,,, it seems,,, well,,,, buried under everything else.

As in my OP, if I gotta,,,, I gotta. If I can get the same stuff for less, then dosn't it make sense to do so ?

I was rather hoping that someone on here might have known that a specific product is identical to 'the' brand,,,,

In the end, I bow down to the knowledge on these pages,,,, cos that wot I joined for.

many thanks to you all

whatever you put in the screenwasher bottle, it will have the same problem unless you periodically run it dry before topping it up. or ive never come across anything that stopped it happening yet!

I use a tiny amount of Auto Glym TFR (traffic film remover ) in screen washer bottles keeps screen crystal clear and no oil film from road water. Coolant that matches Mercedes spec would be fine. Most factors stock VAG rated coolant this woud be on par with Mercedes.

These service or running items need to be good, the MB filters, screen wash and antifreeze are very good if not the best,as they have not been made to a price
