Hi I have just had a tow bar fitted to my 2017
C class 220 Amg line. It is quite a big chunk cut out of my bumper. The guy said when I come to sell I can get a new bumper fitted quite cheaply. He also mentioned a bumper with a cap on it for when I am not using the tow bar. ( it’s detachable). I have searched for this to no avail. Has anyone and experience of this?
Andy.

So to get it back once you sell the car you’ll need a new defuser, couple of hundred quid I’m afraid once painted, clips and getting it fitted.
In all honesty it looks like it has been butchered to get the towbar in, I’d wonder if it really was made for the model or just a generic bar.
Btw did you check that your car has a towing weight marked on the b puller, there are quite a few AMG line models that don’t and there make it illegal to tow with (fitters should also refuse to fit a bar because of this too)

Hi thanks. Yes it has a towing weight on the log book. What is the b puller?
I was hoping to get a bumper fitted now with a detachable bit of plastic I can remove when I am towing.

The centre door post, there is a plate pop riveted to it or it can be a sticker..................Some will spell check and get it wrong 'puller'

I got it. Also. When he was fitting it, the key battery went. He said he would charge as i drove it. Is that true or do I need to replace?

Have to agree that's a shocking piece of butchery, sorry! New diffuser come selling time. You might want to check out breakers in good time and store it when the price is right.

You'll need to replace the key battery , make sure you get a decent brand not the £ shop rubbish those only last days. They don't recharge

Not sure what else he could have done. It kept the wire in order to enable the boot to still open with my foot.
he did mention I could get a new bumper with a removable panel on it. I can’t see any and Mercedes aren’t answering.

See if they still have the piece they cut out. May be able to do patch repair in future

Nope, the factory fit unit swings out from under the bumper and locks into place so doesn’t need a cutout. Painted bumper as a full unit is likely to cost around £600 and maybe a little more for fitting and paint match

Sorry should have mentioned the Key battery CR2025 in case you didn't know. Varta, Duracell, Panasonic all last well

Bugger. I spoke to quite a few tow bar people. Most didn’t want to touch it because of the boot sensor. Gutted.

For anybody else who needs a towbar on their C Class AMG Line, Tow Trust make one that doesn't need a bumper cut and probably so will others. Not the cheapest, but the cost must be factored against the cost the OP faces having his car reinstated come sale time.

If anybody wants to see how mine is, let me have an email address and I will take a couple of pics.

Please excuse the red/bold text, but I get annoyed when people get caught as the OP has!

Ernie

Incidentally, when the detachable bit is removed, the under-bumper switch for the boot lid works perfectly; when it is installed, the switch also works but not so conveniently.

Thanks Ernie. Yes I am gutted now. I tried a lot of local companies. They didn’t want to know because of the boot sensor. Then this was said they had done it before. It was £650.

This was the reply when I asked wether the boot sensor will cause a problem and wether the bumper will need cutting. At this point 2 or 3 companies had said they cannot do it. My wife was nagging me to get a new car. A ****** Land Rover. So I was actually happy when I hit this response.

The bumper might need a cut but that is in the under tray with regard to the boot sensor. We can't guarantee it will
still work as some do & some don't as obviously the towbar masks the sensor once fitted. Also on some models the sensor is just
stuck to the bumper inside face and then we can reposition it but on others it is moulded into the bumper & then cannot be repositioned”
