Hello.

I'm trying to find an aftermarket detachable towbar that will fit my car.

It appears due to the shape of the AMG bumpers, standard products just don't fit.

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated? Has anyone else got a towbar fitted to to AMG or standard car, and could you post some detailed pictures?;-)

Hello Dave and welcome to the forum, we do not get many request on towing though we had one a couple of back on a S Class, I take it that your bumper is too deep to take a standard fitting.

Could this be the reason why the dealers say that fiting a towbar to an AMG is not recommended?

I've got a removable towbar fitted to my E430 Avantgarde. It is quite close to the bottom of the bumper, actually now that I think about it, it touchs.

If the AMG rear bumper sits any lower I think that you'll need to look at cutting a hole and fitting a cover plate. You'll probably need to reposition the sockets as well so that, all though not visible thay can be accessed.

Trying to get a towbar for my 320 E class (AMG body styling)

Thanks for your posts guys,

My car is a elegance cdi 320 E.class with AMG factory fitted body styling, the only difference to the shape is below the bumper line, on the standard elegance it curves slighly in. On the AMG it more or less goes down straight then slighly in before bolging:cool: slightly out and is 10m lower. I do realise a towbar is not listed for the AMG's perhaps this is because i would have two exhausts each side where mine is one side only as the elegant 320 would be, mercedes are fitting AMG body styling to the 280's CDI's and the 320 CDI's as an optional extra ( as mine is) making it difficult to have a towbar fitted. I would not mind a small cut to allow for the extra low style but I think the problem would be that the ball would be too close to the body (possibly this could be overcome by having a longer arm on the removeable ball)

Any suggestions would be appreciatd. Dave

Some AMG cars Dave do not have a spare wheel, could this be a reason as well ?

Just had another thought, you could use spacers, between the floor and the bar, the detachable tow bars do stick out further than the fixed,so should clear the bumper

Not recommended. The leverage on the bolt fixing points increases exponentially. I have a Merc retractable on my E and could measure up in the morning if it would help but I believe they cost about the same as a small caravan. But mine is an estate, maybe the rear skirt is different.

hi dave,
if you don't mind the cut out then you can get a spacer between the ball and the mounting plate with corresponding longer bolts. i had to do this on my 210 as the caravan had an alko hitch which is slightly longer than normal.
cheers

I had a removable tow hitch fitted to mine - I can't remember the make, but I didn't have it done at my dealers. I did ask, but they told me that they sent the cars to an outside fitters anyway for this sort of work and so it would be cheaper for me to go direct.

I'll have a look and see what the make is and also measure the distance from the towhitch socket to the towhitch ball.

I've just noted that your E class is a 2005 model, so things may differ as mine is a 1998.

My removable towbar is made by Brink, when fitted the back edge of the ball is 6.5" from the cross panel under the bottom rubber seal of the boot (measured with the boot open) and about 5" below the boot lip.

It was fitted by Towcraft Ltd of Rowley Regis.
