I have a 2003 S 320 Diesel - within the Command System is a Traffic Info System which is either free or you can subscribe to. On my system it is greyed out and looks like I can't access it - can anyone shed some light on this for me? (I'm a self employed chauffeur therefore it would be very useful to me)

I guess you are referring to the TMC function. This is currently not available in the UK, but is planned to launch end of this year/ beginning of next year. Mercedes signed a deal with the data providers ITIS in Jan 2005, however it is taking some time for them to correct issues with the software and to include the TMC codes. It will require a new DVD disk with TMC codes.

Alternatively, depending on the make and model of the comand i.e. if it is the Blaupunkt system (someone on here should be able to confirm) you could purchase a disk direct from teleatlas which already have the TMC codes on. However i believe sourcing this disk through teleatlas will only provide traffic information on motways due to the software issues/limitations.

I recently contact DC and they can still give no date for launch.

I believe that the S (and CL) class from 9/03 onwards used the DVD-based Navteq Harman/Becker (NTG1 COMAND APS). At least, it says so on my version 4.1 DVD.

If its harmen becker hardware, then you will have to wait until merecedes launches it early next year. Both Navteq and Teleatlas are unable to supply mapping data with TMC for the H/B solution.

It's odd - there is an ongoing discussion on another MB forum I post on where several members can get TMC working - only while tuned to Classic FM though. Bit of Googling backs this up.

However I have never had any success in either by CL or current garage car (new E class).

You have to have a TMC enabled system - I *THINK* that grey TMC indicates you don't have an active disc, black indicates an active disc but no signal and red indicates Nav operating with TMC information.

As I can't get the damn thing to work I am having to go on others statements though.

if your nav system supports TMC but your software doesn't then it will come up with no TMC reception available in the UK. this is beacuse it works in Germany with the Navteq 4.1 system.

if TMC doesnt show up in your menu then the hardware of your system doesn't support TMC.

If you know its enabled and your systems support it, then you need to get the books out and take a look. either you need to press some combinations of buttons or you need a software upgrade. at present in the UK only Classic FM puts out the digital signal for TMC. You dont need to tune the radio in for it tho. it sorts it for you.

You need to activate the navigation route finder first. so program a destination and calculate the route and then try it.

Please note that if you are using a mercedes supplied navigation disk NO system will allow the TMC to be enabled in the UK. Mercedes do not currently support this function in the UK. Planned release date is still being discussed. If you are lucky and have an older Blaupunkt Comand DX system. and have purchased a DVD from teleatlas (Navshop) then the TMC menu option will become available and will function (however i have heard that it is only limited functionality and only covers the motorways). Suggest members put more pressue on Mercedes HQ (Tel No 0080017777777) to push the release date of a TMC enabled navigation disk.
