Boys and Ladies!!!

Ive got this 1995 C140 in at the moment and the chap that owns it recently spent huge amounts getting the autobox reconned.

Ive noticed in drive I move forward, I stop and select reverse and it takes 8 second before reverse is engaged, same applies if I reverse and then select drive 8 seconds before it engages, I would think this is normal for a recon auto box.
The chaps that rebuilt it said it would do this to start and get better with use.

Is this right?

2018 '18' Ford Edge tdci biturbo (sorry)
i know nothing about auto boxes. i wish mine had a manual (still miss a manual when on the open road!) however that seems far to long to me. every auto i drove when working as a mechanic at ford, nissan and other general garages, they all seemed to engage more or less instantly. ok maybe be sluggish for a while till everything gets properly full of oil, but id think we would be talking a few minutes in each gear to sort that. sounds like something is sadly wrong from where im sitting!

I wonder if the vacuum pipes are connected correctly, these boxes have the modulator ass on them

Sounds more of a rebuilt box than reconditioned.Almost certainly a sticking piston in the valve body, or sludge in there. As Jet says, schematic flow diagrams are essential, & as the fault only manifests itself under 1 set of conditions, it should be relatively easy to track down!!!
In the olden days when the 722 box was still new, there was a mod to fix a similar fault. Remove valve block, split in 2 & redrill 1 hole in the sandwich plate to a larger size.
It's normal for a box to need time to settle after overhaul, but it is only a few miles.
Offer to drain the oil & check it for contamination. If it is slowly engaging he could be suffering slippage on the friction surfaces which will give this box a limited life. You have nothing to loose from this course of action, & if you can give him something tangeble to go back to them with it can only enhance your reputation.

Many thanks for your comments and I will suggest the customer take the car back and have them look at the problem, as I noticed yesterday going from reverse to drive, I put my foot down and the engine revved and then forward drive engaged with a bang and plently of wheel spin, not good, could have snapped a drive shaft.

The fact that it engages is what points to a valve body obstruction/sticking.
If it was a damaged slip ring etc in the gear train it should show up when driving too as they are all used in one way or another then as well.
Arm him with as much info as possible.
I should have a schematic in the loft somewhere (not much use to me as I don't have the tools for the boxes anyway!).
