transmission control unit

anybody tell me what this unit actually does in layman terms.

mercedes benz part number 0002701852 switching unit

dont want to get confused with the tcu,

It just comes up as an 'intelligent servo module, switching unit'

Im sure others will know its actual purpose

was told it had something to do with handbrake, could not see that, but my handbrake is not working , i believe it is the winder motor ?

Give us a clue - what is and/or isn't working/giving problems?
What have you been told is wrong?

It might be the servo module on the side of the 'box (with column shift cars - ie W221) that shifts gear positions.
