My transmission was rebuilt because I didn't have reverse. It now doesn't have passing gear. I should have asked for help before having it rebuilt but that's hind sight now. Is there anyone out there who can help me before I take it back to the mechanic that rebuilt it. Thanks.

What do you mean by passing gear? Is it auto or manual. You need to supply some more information or you will be getting more posts like this.

Yes, it is an automatic with overdrive. Thanks Aussie Nick. Sorry, but I'm new to this. It is suppose to automatically down shift to a lower gear when you press the accelerator to move faster. We call it passing gear in the US because it's usually engaged when trying to pass another car on a two lane highway.

Ok Preacher Im with you now. This is commonly called the kickdown where I come from. I was not aware that Mercedes ever called its final gear an overdrive. This is more common in some Japanese makes. In any event the auto is quite possibly an electronic box and it could be that your mechanic has failed to properly connect the electronics properly. I must confess that I am not an expert in this particular model. Some of my more learned and experienced bretheren will soon be attending to answer your problem. I believe Brother Malcolm is currently attending to some earthly affairs . Iam sure he and other more senior members will shortly be with you to assist. God bless.

Hi , again preacher . I see that no one has responded yet . Can I ask if you can manually change down a gear from top gear by using the transmission shift lever? How many gears does it have?

Hi Aussie Nick,
The answer is yes, you can change down a gear from a top gear manually. It is a four speed automtic, so it has four gears. Thanks for your responses and may God bless and keep you and your family.

Hi,
I think 229 must be on another diagram. I will tell my guys about the kick down switch but if you could send me a diagram that displays the kick down switch, I would really appreciate it. Thank you so much for your reply and may God bless and keep you.
