Hi all,
First time visitor and poster.

I've just picked up a 2002, C200 kompressor, w203 petrol.

I'm having problems with car jerking harshly when I select drive and reverse.

I'm wondering if its the transmission conductor plate or maybe the rear diff.

any ideas?

thanks peeps

What mileage buddy ? When was the gearbox last serviced , it’s recommended every 40k miles .
I would start with checking the gearbox oil level first .
Is the gearbox tab red or black on the engine bay gearbox dipstick

Hello
This may sound daft but try putting in drive from neutral without putting your foot on the brake
I did this and it sorted the same problem out for me

hi wighty,
Thanks for your reply.

I was given the car about 6 months ago its done about 158K, unsure about the last transmission service. but the person who gave me car had it for about 3 years and it has invoices for servicing covering that time.

the Black cap has a red bit of plastic, like in the picture.

I love this car so really hope its not something major.

When your car was produced the thinking was the gearbox was sealed for life (or at least sealed until death ) . The red tab MAY indicate the atf/filter was changed , but it may just mean the level was checked .
If you can’t find a recent record of a change in the last 40k you need atf/filter doing ASAP

As above change the oil before you do anything else. Clean oil is critical in the correct running of an auto gearbox.

The gearbox control units can sometimes get a bit glitchy if they haven't been re-set for a while.

Same kind of a jerkiness happens in my w210 2002 722.6 transmission when changing from D to R, but mine might be a little less jerky so to me it is a normal thing.....I somehow imagine it is coming from rear diff because of the pressure changing in the differ when changing from D to R and vice versa....... But be sure to check out what others recommend to check at first

Change ATF and filter then reset gearbox. Check you have no codes showing. That will sort out the 'user' options. Check your tickover rpm is in range

When you put the car into drive or reverse, does it BANG into gear really aggressively?

If yes, its either a conductor plate fault, TCU fault or Selector module fault.

You need to diagnose which to enact an effect repair!

When you drive, does it change gear at all?

On my 2001 203, that was a selector module fault. It started out with the symptom you describe then wouldn't go into reverse and stayed in 3rd I think.
I limped to my local Indie and left it overnight whilst he got a new (reconditioned) unit and all was well.

Thanks for you help everyone.

Ive been super busy since my last post and only was able to do anything yesterday.

Ive changed the oil filter, oil and connector housing.

As i removed the old connecter the captive nut just sherd off with minimal force.

And yes it bangs quite aggressively even after the oil change.

And no longer changes gears. Sticks in first.
Thank again for the help
