I have a 1987 TD 300 automatic with 200,000 miles on it. It recently did not up-shift from 2nd gear so I pulled over and turned of the engine then restarted it, drove off and it up-shifted properly through all the gears. A few days later it did it again and the same fix worked. After it happened to my wife she took it to the mechanic who said it needs a new transmission. This current transmission, other than the described new problem, shifts crisply and does not slip. It seems to be a control system problem like a stuck kick-down electric control that was reset by turning the car off or some other valve that is getting stuck. Changing the transmission seems a little extreme. Do people repair or only replace transmissions? Anyone have any idea what might cause this?
