Dear All,
I'm hoping that members of the club can help me with the following request.
I am currently working on a drama reconstruction television programme for National Geographic about the Israeli raid on Entebbe airport and need to try and locate a 1970s Mercedes estate (preferably black although we can work with navy, dark brown or burgundy) that we can hire for use in the programme. In 1976 Israeli special forces rather daringly raided Entebbe airport in a rescue mission to liberate 100 Israeli hostages who had been seized during the hijack of an Air France flight from Athens to Paris. The Palestinian and German terrorists had got the support and permission from Idi Amin to land the plane in Uganda and hold the hostages there while they negotiated with the Israeli government over the release of prisoners.
The Israeli special forces hatched a rescue mission that can only be described as brazen that involved landing a Hercules plane at the airport and then unleashing a convoy of two jeeps and a black Mercedes estate containing Israeli special forces. The hope was that the appearance of the convoy would fool the Ugandan guards into believing that they were Idi Amin coming to inspect the hostages. The plan worked and the mission was a success.
While we have secured access to a Hercules Plane we are struggling to find a Mercedes estate from the period. While it doesn't need to be an exact copy and we are more than happy to consider a model slightly after the date provided it looks similar in shape it would be good to find out how readily these cars are available in the UK.
We are hoping to film the reconstruction just after Easter and I'm slightly concerned that the car might be the hardest thing to track down. I was wondering if the Mercedes club knew of any owners or dealerships that might be able to point me in the right direction or indeed if anyone owns a vehicle that may be appropiate.
Any information no matter how small would be truly appreciated. I can be contacted on 020 7482 7027 or kate.bullions@darlowsmithson
Best wishes,
Kate
