Not much to do to the M113 NA engine. A remap will add 15-20bhp and 20 torques. Secondary cats delete will add 8-10bhp. The engine is pretty clean as is but the non Kompressor engines are very “lazy”.

I have the same quandary with my CL. Remap and secondary cats deletion will cost around £500 to add 10% power and 5% torque. Is it worth it?

I believe Malcolm's SL has secondary cats removed and a remap.
If so I'm underwhelmed. My r129 feels quicker.

It has. Malcolm used his car as a guinea pig for M113 tuning and I based my plans on his observations.

From what I understand of the actual figures the 129-140/ 230-215 in 500 guise are all gnats nadger to 100, 150 and VMax km/h’s, but the newer cars feel slower in it.

So out of interest, the 119 has 18 more metric horses and 15 more metric torques than the 113. The 113 has a much broader peak torque range which thus starts lower down the rev band than the 119. 119 equipped cars should have a slightly higher top speed and very slightly improved high speed acceleration than 113 equipped cars.

It’s not about numbers, it’s about how the engine feels and responds.

The M113 feels like a whirring, lightweight engine, the M119 feels a little slower to respond, but it also feels like it could pull a freight train.

That’s interesting you say that. There is a significant mass difference between the two with the 119 unit being the heavier.

Nice summary.
The 113 is definitely more throttle responsive than the 119 but once the 119 wakes up it's like a charging Rhino and the bellow as it does is quite throaty and visceral.
The 113 has a lighter less meaty tone - more a gutteral rasp than a roar.

One thing I intend to do on Malcolms is change the x-pipe design.
The current one is a simple X with the two pipes crossing at right angles. I intend to replace it with a much longer X over - around 10". Testing on Aussie V8s of the same capacity and power showed a 10hp gain at the top end and a higher torque peak in the midrange.
I fitted one to an Audi A8 I had and it sounded glorious too with a real howl at around 4000 rpm.

This is what I have in mind:
