I found these on www.needforspeed.co.uk

They are made by Jetex, list  a model suitable for the A170 & claim a 20-30bhp gain. No mention of the mpg tho'.

Has anybody tried these?

Any comment or info welcome.

Nige,

there are loads of different performance modules available for diesels.   You can either opt for a plug-in module or replace/re-map the existing chip in your cars ECU.  By re-mapping the fuel delivery they manage to increase bhp and torque - with the bonus of improved mpg (providing you don't lean to much on the loud pedal!!).

Have a look through "Diesel Car" mag next time you're in a newsagent.   Also look at www.tuningbox.com and www.superchips.co.uk for further examples.

I would also be interested in thoughts from anyone who's had a chip or 'piggy back' module fitted. I've done some research into these and having been quoted £350 - through to £980 +VAT +Carriage +fitting it would be useful to know actual users opinions.

I am a little hesitant to have a chip change as that is a little permanent - the module seems to be the best solution as it is reversible and can be swopped to another car (Same model).

In Diesel Car magazine there seems to be plenty of advertorials trumpeting the benefits of the different types but very rarely any feedback from users. Also there is a number for sale in the classifieds every month, so they might not always be good!

I've reported this previously, but I've seen a tuning box module installed on VW td with excellent results - improved mpg, but more importantly far better drivability and livelier (not hot hatch) performance.  Minimum installation required and removable prior to dealer servicing etc.

I think Andy Gayle has experience of Superchips upgrades so he may be able to advise.

Ballacraine.

The only personal experience i have of after market turbo suppliers, is from when i had my 250D, i emailed a couple of firms to get quotes, one of which showed a picture of a previous intallation on the model i had. That was in October last year, i know they read the emails, because i got the read reciepts, the quotes were slightly longer coming, I.E. I'm still waiting!!

Don't think these kits involve turbo replacement, Dave.

I think they just modify the injection, don't they?

Hi all

Had my 320CE chiped by Super Chips. Great people. No what they are doing. And have good Reserch & Development facilities. I seen them. They replaced my chip. Gave me my old one. If I need it removed then they will sort it. No problems. Great people.

Hi Andy,

sorry to hassle you, but could you give us your overall impression as to how the upgrade has improved the car and the overall driving experience?

I am leaning towards going for one of those tuningbox kits.

I would agree with that, all I've read on the subject has been journo's articles about how good they are and very little feedback from people who've spent their own hard earned.

My rationale is that whilst Superchips have excellent R&D etc, a module is easily removed for servicing etc (especially those with warranty issues.....) and if there's ever a problem a soldered in chip may be the cause....!

AmD in Oxfordshire

http://www.auto-amd.com/

chipped my VW Corrado with a module and the results were excellent much smoother, more torque etc and that was with a naturally aspirated engine. They have an arrangement with DMS in Hampshire

http://www.turbodiesel.uk.com/

for any customers with diesel cars, if their work and service is half as good as AmD's then it'll be superb!

Let me know what you go with - I'd be interested in your verdict.

Hi Dave

Sorry its taken so long to come back to you. I have a 320CE. Most of the companies which specialise in chipping. Find the most significant gains on Turbo Diesels. Its easy to see why when you understand the mechanics of it. With no problems with reliability. That said. The petrol engines power increases arn't as significant. But I found that it seemed to rev better (although superchips said most customers said this and was more physchological as nothing in the chip effected the rpm). But the midrange torque although subtle made improvement.

I like it. Can't say it improved fuel consumption much. But didn't make it worse either. I was there when they fitted it. As I have said. Very professional.  I would say that the diesels are where the improvements will be.

Regards

Andy:   Thanks the feedback.  I guess a "subtle improvement" is to be expected with such a heavy sh*ll
, yes ?   The key statement there was that there were no adverse affects on fuel consumption!

CDI guys:   there's a Tuning Box for Mercedes CDi engines for sale in the reader ads section of this months Diesel Car.   According to the add, it's new with warranty for £320 - 07779 328994 (S.Wales).

Go for it !

I've spoken to the chap at DMS who gave me some interesting info on these boxes.

Apparently the majority of the cheaper plug-in boxes simply interfere with the injector pulse length and simply add more fuel. This has the obvious advantage with a diesel of giving instant power and subsequent torque.

The DMS box has been developed using a rolling road and full mapping is put on the chips which actually are more powerful (computer wise) than the ECU on the car. He does deal with a number of main dealers (Merc, BMW & Audi) who offer them on new vehicles.

It's not as cheap as Tuning Box or the Jetex one, but you pays your money...........

I'm booking mine in for a DMS box so I'll post an opinion soon.

Update:

Spoke to the guy advertising in Diesel Car, it came off a van which has been passed on to another driver in his company. Not doubting the integrity of the seller but I'm doubtful about the 'one box fits all' approach.

Mines now booked in to DMS for the week after the holiday.  Can't wait!

Richard,

Sounds like the DMS folk have taken this re-mapping trend a few steps further up the development ladder.  I (and I expect a few others) would be very interested to hear what you make of them and their products.

Hope all goes well.

Friend of mine just got a box for his Rover 75 turbo diesel (BMW engine ;) )
The guys in the know (engineers, not sales men) say its fine, just dont rag the motor at Vmax for long periods, as this will overheat the turbo.

All I can say is BUY ONE!!!!!!!!

The change is quite dramatic, with the std 220 the power band is quite narrow and it feels asthmatic above about 3500rpm. Now I can trickle in 5th at 40mph and just accelerate without having to change down.

It's noticably quicker, but only when you actually look at the speedo 'cos its so much quieter....... why don't they make them like this at the factory? (rhetorical.......!)

http://www.turbodiesel.uk.com/

Ask for Rob, he was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, fitting is easy and he's got dealers in most major areas. (based in Hook - just outside Basingstoke)

The box is transferable with a software change, etc etc etc.

I can't enthuse enough about the change, so I'll shut up now!

Greg - his website ,emtions he does do petrol cars - whether he can get one for a 240 I'm not sure.
