Hello everyone,
I've had several replies to my last thread involving a turbine like whining coming from the engine area of my ML 270. These range from leaving it alone to the turbo spooling up. I am grateful for all replies.
I dont mind putting up with it whilst I'm local, but every year we tow a caravan to France and the thought of sitting on the hard shoulder with a wife and three kids makes me come out in a cold sweat!!
Does it mean my turbo is on the way out? And if so, where do I get a recon/new one. Cheers Cliff

They do tend to whistle and that is normal.

It is best you let someone who knows the car well to have a listen.

The term 'turbo spooling up' does not mean there is anything wrong with your turbo, it simply means that the turbo impellor is increasing its speed.......it can reach speeds in excess of 90k rpm

You may have a leak on the air side of the turbo, either the inlet / air filter end or the outlet / intecooler / engine side. Chech at all the joints in the pipe work.

Could also be a leak on the exhaust side, if you have a leak on the air side? get it fixed straight away, a leak here can cause the turbo to spin too quickly (whilst trying to maintain pressure)

Or your turbo may be worn out!

A leak on the turbo side would be a boost leak. Symptoms include loss of power, boost coming in later and poor fuel consumption. It's usually just a boost pipe which is not on tight enough. As suggested follow the pipes from the air intake to the turbo, from the turbo to the intercooler and then to the inlet manifold. Check they are all on tight.
