There is a light on the dash which says the airbag is off which comes on at start up. This goes out I assume once the "thing" its connected to is up to speed (charged?).

Assuming that this is to show that the airbag is turned off (rather than being faulty and not operating)

How does one turn it off, and is the light only referring to the passenger side airbags in case there is a child seat fitted in the passenger seat?

Thanks

there are no airbag off switches on Mercs. The light is a self test and you can only turn it off if you use an MB child seat with the transponder.
There are ways of disconnecting the airbags involving disconnecting teh wiring and bypassing using an appropriately sized resistor to trick the self check, and switches available on the web to do the same job too.
