T212 facelift, 2013. A few toys including pan roof, 19" rims, Harmon Kardon, nappa, privacy glass.
My better half bought a 'bargain' flatscreen LCD off ebay. It was £20 as the built in DVD player was broken (despite the fact we only wanted it for the built in DVD)....I know....don't ask. It was clearly advertised as broken...again, don't say it !

It is a Goodmans 15" GTVL 15n5DVD.

The DVD fault is that you load a DVD and it then ejects it after about 5 seconds, it does not spin.

Accepting she only paid £20 for it, but any ideas if this is a simple fix.

The pick up will have gone dead,,it needs to see the reflection when loaded,,it see's nothing and ejects it again.
The reflection gives a kick start to read the disc.

Many computer drives are the same

is this reapairable and a cheap part Malcolm or is it a throwaway ? The quality of the LCD is average to say the least, but would tide my boy over for his cartoon dvd's if we could get it going.

right just found the replacement part for £14. My question now is , is it a case of unscrew/connect and rescrew/connect or is there soldering /other stuff involved ?

Anyone know ?

Many thanks

well theyre not made to be repaired now i dont think. unless you can fix them yourself, they cost more to repair than to replace. or at least thats how it seems anyhow

Part of the problem is that most electronic parts are made on high density circuit boards, using smd techniques and many are either acetate style (bendy!) or multi-layer boards which all make it difficult if not impossible to repair at component level on failure. The cost to supply even basic spares versus a new item is prohibitive due to the distribution costs. Add the hourly rate of a repairer and there are few items that we buy nowadays that are cost effectively repairable versus the purchase price of a replacement.

right then. Have the back off the tv and looking at the DVD player which is attached by four screws.

If I buy the replacement pick...where is it ?? I know it is in the 'square' DVD player but it is not obvious. Any ideas please on how to guide me to the right piece ??

Many thanks

If you're going to have a stab at cleaning the unit get some isopropynol (propan 2 OL) and a couple of cottonbuds.

It may well be that substitution is the best way forward as Malcolm has already suggested, but it will be worth giving it a clean just in case.

The pick up will have gone dead,,it needs to see the reflection when loaded,,it see's nothing and ejects it again.
The reflection gives a kick start to read the disc.

Many computer drives are the same

It may well be a pickup (laser) fault but if it simply ejected on not seeing a reflection then surely it would do that if the drawer was closed with no DVD present?

I'd have thought more likely that the drive sees the disk but doesn't recognise it, hence it ejects it. If that's right then it could be the pickup, or other electronics within the drive, or possibly elsewhere in the TV.

I have had this fault on a PC and the supplier just sent me a whole new drive.
