Hi folks , i got a question for you all.  These is nothing wrong , but .. under the bonet of my car , i have two sets of fans . I have one BIG which is for the raidiator and is driven off the engine , but the ones i don't know about are the two electric fans in front of the grill . I have not seen these turn and am curious about their purpose in the engine bay?  One of my friends suggested the AC , anyone confirm this or suggest somthing else?

Hi Jason,

I'm just guessing here but could it be something to do with when you put the A/C into REST mode when the engine is switched off? I'm guessing it hammers the battery less to move smaller fans.

I'm sure Andy will enlighten us as to their true purpose.

Does your dad have a C240 too? If not, maybe his fans are located in a different place.

Just  as a side note to our posts of a few days back... I think my car has blocked pollen filters too like yours did. The other day was clear as a bell and I switched the fan onto something like 2 or 3 and the car actually went from clear to misted up for like a minute or so before then clearing up again.

The Best way to check is two things . I opened the airbox just under the windscreen . its only held on witha  few retianer clips . This is easier if the bonet goes into the upright position. To remove the pollen filter . Its just under the glovebox in the passenger footwell three screws and its the smaller of the compartments . The pollen filter is about £15 or so from the dealer. My windows clear like winkie now i ahve changed the filter and unblocked the drain ..

Could it be the oil cooler for the transmission.

The fans come on if the engine temp exceeds 100c I believe.

Will monitor things . If they are for the 100 degree + purpose , i hope i never see them working !!! If they are for the A/C it must be for the cooling part as i always have the a/c on without question . Ill post again if i work out what they are for ..

Thanks all

As your car is equipped with A/C, then that is what they are for, i take it they are in front of what looks like an additional readiator?

They are for the aircon. Switch it on with the bonnet up, and watch em spin!!!

Keeping all dangling items well clear of course!!

For an added treat on a hot day,  you can see all 3 fans going round, and watch your toupe blow off down the street!!!!

cheers

Hi all

The two fans refered to are as indicated for the AC, and the engine temp. If the pressure in the AC system gets too high or the engine gets too hot they cut in.

All AC systems will either have two fans or one big fan. Exluding the normal engine fan.

The reason the vehicle screens mists up quickly before clearing (and can be quite disconcerting at times) is due to the hot air passing over the cold evaporator. Hey presto you can't see for a couple of seconds.

Regards
