I might as well ask the experienced people:)
I drive an e 211 avantgarde diesel and the road noise is serious...now without going out to look at the make (spurious) and heavy V patterned directional tread. what In your opinion is the quietest with comfort? I am drawn to pirelli, others suggest continental,...I dont do much motorway, but a fair bit of dual-carriageway,any suggestions.

the Conti is one of the quietest along with the Michelin , yes the big V treads can get very noisy

Falken 452 get good reviews and many report they have very good grip in both wet and dry conditions. They are quiet and wear reasonably well.

Best of all they are approx half the cost of Contis, Michelins etc..

I will be try a set in the next month or so. My dealer quoted £160pr fronts and £180pr rears, all in :)

You're right about the big V tread tyres. That was the big issue with the Federal S595s I ran on. Good grip and decent mileage but they were noisy, especially as they wore, and with the noise generation comes a fine vibration which harmed the refinement of the ride.

In your question, you have the answer. Avoid anything with a big wide tread pattern and go for something where the tread is broken up into chunks. I went with Khumo which are refined and quiet, have excellent grip and appear to be wearing at a similar rate to Continentals and Bridgestones, but if you're averse to budget tyres as some are (not sure with recent price increases Khumos are still budget but anyway) Contis have a closer pattern and seem to give good refinement, and my personal preference, Michelin are quiet and refined whilst providing the best overall mileage.

Properly shod, a 211 should purr along almost silently. Mine does anyway or at least it does now.
The khumos were a revelation. I chose them because I'd driven a friend's E320cdi (211) on khumos and it rode 100 times better than mine did so when my old tyres finally wore out I gave them a try. No regrets so far.....

So you wore out the falkens in 10k so now you are driving much slower in order to save the Kumho's :D:D

No chance of that. Most mileage is on the motorway. First set of KU31's did 20K miles. They didn't have the Kumho's in stock next time round but recommended the Falkens which I have to say were very good except they didn't last. Needless to say I'm back on the Kumho's and they have done around 12K miles and the rears only look 50% worn.

I've also tried the assymetric Kumho KU19 but these only went 12K miles.

I have the 7G box and tend to run in 'C' mode. I suspect running in 'S' might have an impact.

Statement from Kumho:

"The Ecsta KU19 product is designed as a specialist total performance UHP tyre with good levels of wet and dry performance and acceptable levels of wear performance when compared with the leading European tyre manufacturers and uses a very sophisticated tread compound for this.

The Ecsta SPT KU31 is aimed at the more mainstream UHP car fitments,
and therefore uses a tread compound which still has safe levels of wet
and dry performance, but potentially more wear performance when compared
with the KU19 product".

The Ecsta SPT KU31 did worst of all in a test in the wet in Sweden

I'm only commenting on my experience of these tyres having used them for the last 6 or 7 years on the SLK, my C Class and a previous Ford. I agree that the original 712 was hopeless in the wet but there's hardly anything in it with the KU31, Falken 452 and Contis apart from the price and mileage. How can you comment on these if you haven't tried them?

good point but one does have to take into account of what you read,,same as when you buy a car. I know that Auto Express gave them a good write up,,very confusing

True Malcolm. If only there were a scientific way to really test these things. Even the treadwear values are meaningless. I trust the reviews but as we discussed previously, how a tyre will behave on one car doesn't really tell us how it will behave on another. Just look at F1! Same tyres, even similar weights in their case, yet different grip, tyre wear etc.
As for car reviews, its so much a personal thing that they're virtually meaningless. One reviewer will proclaim how great a car handles whilst another will point out that the ride is awful or the road noise unbearable - still handles well mind.

Have driven A Classes - same wheel sizes - with Kumho Solus in one case and Continental Eco Contact 3 in the other. Contis much quieter and better ride.

Nexen Tire

Try this?? It is a cheap alternative. I have no involvement in Nexen.

The Nexen CP641 fetures a rotaion type design, circumferential groves that are reducing hydroplaning. The tire delivers a quiet driving experience.

The "treadlife warranty : 55,000 miles" is interesting. That would indicate the least they expect - which is rather more than most Forum members get from their tyres.

It would also suggest that, with care and prudent driving, rather more could be achieved.

How do they do it?

Just put a set of Michelin Primacy on my Outback on wider alloys and even allowing for the fact I'm a Michelin fan the quietness of the ride is amazing. If the noise is your worst worry the Primacy's will please you.
