I'm a very proud owner of a 95 280E Auto sedan that has been fitted with 17" inch Merc wheels with 225 45 17 ZR tyres on it. Last night, in the confusion that is the local pub's New Years Eve Party someone swore blind that the pressures you have to use on these fatter, lower profile tyres are different to the standard pressures used on standard tyres.

Conversation went like this :-

"Sho...wot pressssssures that then huh? By the way, you're my new bestest mate!"
"Dunno..but if you c*ck it up, you'll end up in a hedge. I love you too mate!"

Any ideas anyone? 30 in front 32 at the back?

When I have changed tyre sizes i have been in contact with the tyre manufacture and the answer is always use original presures.
I believe that Tom 3035 found the same to be true on another thread the same

just monitor it with your tyre wear, too higher pressure and you'll notice wear in the centre of the tyre, too low and the egdes will wear first.

I agree with all the other posts though keeping things standard has got to be a good starting point.

Chris,

I agree with the rest that standard pressures are a good starting point, but if you want to tailor the pressure to your particular circumstances of load/driving etc then use the chalk method. I've mentioned it before on other threads but basically mark a chalk line across the tread, drive a short distance a few hundred yards or less, check the line and adjust the pressure until you can evenly erase it when you drive. This will indicate that the tyre tread is flat on the road and at the correct pressure.

Tyre Pressures

Hi Chris, I run 225/45/17's P6000's on 7.5 X 17's on my E320 Coupe.

Merc recommend 35 front and 36 rear.

IMHO I recommend 35 front and 35 rear as I used to run factory spec but the rears wore slightly more in the middle of the tread indicating too high a pressure.

I have 7.5 x 17's fitted with 235/45/17's - my local tyre place told me to put 34 in the fronts and 35 in the rears

Ride feels a little harsh but the wear seems to be even

We usually have them at 32/32 - the pressures are shown on the inside of the petrol flap and if I understand it correctly it shows the required pressures with the car empty or loaded and up to what speeds.
