Does anyone know if a 2003(53) sl55, should have some sort of low tyre pressure warning system, and if so, how do you set it up.

Tyre pressure monitoring was an extra on your car, if you have it, it will be in the menu

Does this system operate with miniature, battery-powered pressure transducers with radio frequency transmitters fitted inside the wheel?

I dont think it's anything fancy, on mine R171 it works off the ABS sensors, as the tyre pressure drops it senses that the wheel size has dropped, due to lack of pressure and is turning faster. I believe you can have it activated using star, never done that, but like most MB it's in there some ware and if it's not an add on device the wiring is usually there as they tend to use a common wiring harness.

Yes there is the simple system that runs from the speed signal or the more sophisticated method of having senders in each wheel

The photo is the wheel monitor

So ... if I understand this system correctly, it will identify when a tyre is under inflated but is not clever enough to indicate by how much? I assume it won't indicate over inflation?

i hope the merc system is better than renault's,i had a laguna ( new shape 2002 model) for a short time, what a bag of rubbish that car was gggrrrrrrrrrrrrr, anyway it have low pressure sensors fitted in the wheel valves, and it was allways going off, allways wrong of course, but it cost's £25 a time to get the system reset at renault,i ended up taking the valves out in the end and having the system turned off by an independent,it was getting stupid, sometimes activating 3 times a week.you could get round it sometimes by completly deflating the tyre at a garage and then re-inflating,not good when its raining.
the only good thing to come out of this was the independent garage i found,he had a LOT of renaults in,he fixed all the renault's that the main dealer's couldnt fix.
i once had a running problem, loss of power every now and again, the main dealer quoted £700 + vat + fitting ( £1250 all in ) for a new engine bay wireing harness,he traced a broken wire, fixed it and charged me £85.

none
An alert is triggered if there is sudden pressure loss. Else, the pressure is transmitted every minute.
DIRECT systems use transducers mounted inside the wheel rim.
INDIRECT systems compare wheel speeds from wheels on the same axle.
As of now, EVERY new vehicle supplied in USA must have a DIRECT system fitted..
BERU gen1 sensor life is about 7 years so all the MB vehicles that debuted with this system are about to need new sensors at £100 a go :)

That's interesting - I hadn't heard about that proposal.
I think the USA situation had a lot to do with the Firestone/Explorer thing..

It was announced in the professional motor mechanic, I will try and find the article
