Hi all, fitted four new Michelin Primacy HP tyres (225/55/16W) to my 2004 W211 E320 Cdi Yesterday.

Reason - N/S front had worn right through on the inner & outer edges & lost air. The O/S front wasn't much better. Rears were down to a couple of mm. The old tyres were Primacy HP's as well.

The tyre guys said (and I'm absoluteley sure they're correct) that this was due to under inflation. I've been following the manual and been giving the fronts 29 Psi and the rears 30 Psi (Which were undamaged). The garages charts tell them that this is correct for my car & these tyres.

I know that my 2 tyre gauges at home are accurate as they've been checked against the garage's gauges.

We've gone up to 32 Psi all round to see if we fare any better.

Has anyone had this problem before? These 4 tyres cost an arm & a leg so I dont want them going the same way! What pressures do you put in yours?

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Cheers..................Joker.

Tyre pressures are dictated by the weight of the car, where 2 figures are given I usually use the figure mid way between the 2 this gives a touch harder ride and a better tyre life, so you have gone up just a touch,,and that is fine.

As the tyre starts getting towards the end of their life,,then I adjust,,if the edges are worn more that the middle, then I inflate a little more, and vice versa

hi joker. you will find that when following MB ordained tyre pressures front tyres will wear on either inner or outer edges - if your tracking is exactly spot on then both. rear tyres will wear bang down the center line if rear tracking correct. notice that various mb service schedules reccomend rotating front/rear wheels? that`s why.

Our E220 CDI estate came with new Vredestein Ultrac tyres 225/55 ZR 16 and the manufacturer specifies 33 psi front and 41 psi rear. Seems very high to me but we are trying their setting to see how it goes.

Is that the tyre maker or MB, 41 is very high

I run 32 front 36 rear on mine and seem to get reasonably even wear at that level.

I suspect the ideal settings will vary on how and where you drive as well as what tyres you have, their sidewall stiffness etc. I'd recommend keeping an eye on wear, say every 1-2k and if the centres are wearing before the outer edges, reduce the pressure 2psi and visvera until you find the ideal level for you.
I'm not surprised you got the wear you did at 29/30 though - that is a tad low in my experience.

The 33 psi front and 41 psi rear comes from Vredestein's website.

Thats wrong and too hard,,why not use MB's figures.

Even my SL would be horrible and too hard at 41,,,the odd thing is that all of the tyre makers that I have contacted say use the car makers guide

Don't tell anyone, but I am actually cheating a bit and running the rears at 35/36, I just thought folks ought to know what kind of fugures are being put about out there..

Make sure that the tyres are 93 rated minimum for weight.

A lot of town driving will naturally wear the inner and outer edges faster than the centre due to the power steering, weight of the car and the front steering geometry.

Personally I use 2-3 psi extra all round than the MB figures. Which places it closer to the high speed all day pressures shown on the fuel cap.

I do that as well,,there is the point where the ride gets too hard, and the best all round pressure lies between the 2 MB figures

I've never tried this, but an old racing trick is to put a chalk band across the tyre and adjust the pressures until it wears off evenly.

Could someone please try this and tell me if it works, as I haven't got any chalk!

(Bizzarely, my daughter is a teacher and I asked her for some - she looked horrified, they use projectors and white boards now!)

Thats H&SE for you. LEAs terrified of lawsuits from Teachers with emphasema (or some other lung disease) caused by all that nasty chalk dust.

Oddest tyre pressure post on here was sometime ago when someone said their A Class when bought new had shocking ride. Discovered pressures were,I think,25psi - ie 4psi below recommended. Adjusted to recommended 29psi and all now fine.
