Rear wheels are currently 275/30/19. Can I go to 265/35/19

Why would you?
You would need to inform your insurance company if you deviate from standard sizes.

The “30” bit is a percentage of the diameter (the “275” bit). So 265/35 will have a bigger diameter and that could confuse all your systems like ABS, traction control and speedometer - apart from the insurance issues @LostKiwi mentions.

Have a look at this thread as well:

Expensive game this Mercedes ownership . Look for part worns on a 275 profile. Stick with stock.

Yes I've always replaced with 275 part worns but no one has any. The places I've bought from before (and they are huge) all say the same can't get any anymore as the used to import them

Jeez ! I wouldn’t even be thinking about part worns. Why are they part worn, are they too old, damaged from an RTA, faulty, could be any number of things. Tyres and brakes are the two most important elements in a car and not something that should be skimped on.

I usually get mine off at 3mm not put them on at 3mm.

Even budgets have got to be better than half worns.

Nothing wrong with part worns if you know how to check them. Date of manufacture on side of tyre etc. I always check them inside and out. Last ones were set of P Zeros manufactured in 2020 with 7 mm. You must have never bought a second hand car as those tyres are partworn

Yes of course I have bought used cars with part worn tyres but they were a part of the car and in daily use. What you are talking about are discarded tyres. A big difference :)

Yea - I don’t get it. Drive a flash car but skimp to buy tyres of unknown provenance.

Last week I had the rears on my wife’s car changed. Loads of tread, even wear but they were the originals. 7-8 years old. My Indie mentioned it to me at the last service two weeks ago. When I left the tyre workshop ,it crossed my mind that the old ones might end up on another car.

Over the 1000s of miles we will do on a set of tyres it is simply not worth the pennies/mile saved to skimp on tyres.

I am putting new tyres all round on mine due to an advisory on the last MOT

Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):

  • Front Tyre slightly damaged/cracking or perishing offside and nearside (5.2.3 (d) (ii))
  • Rear Tyre slightly damaged/cracking or perishing offside and nearside (5.2.3 (d) (ii))
These tyres are five years old and still have just over 5mm left on them. However I am going to wait until Autumn before I change all four. What particular tyre I have not made up my mind yet but it looks like it might be Continental sportcontact 7 unless unless I can be persuaded that there is something better out there :)

My only issue is why does a 250 “need” 275 wide 19” tyres?
Get some 17” wheels with 245 45 R17 tyres and enjoy the comfort and cheaper tyres. You might even get 225 55 R16 as some E250’s came on 16”’s

I would have thought that the correct size would be 245’s. Mine are 245 x 19 factory fit. I do actually prefer the firmer ride of the 19’s :)

I used to have a tyre company sponsor me when I was racing and they would supply a set of worn tyres as they had better grip than new.
So I used to always fit part worns (most are imported from Germany) up until about 15 years ago when dopy here realised new tyres were getting nearly as cheap. Needless to say I buy new budget tyres now after a spat of punctures with top quality brands.....just bad luck dodging the potholes and screws :(
I haven't had any issues with the budgets on any of my vehicles and the latest budget were £37 each plus £15 fitting and balancing. Admittedly they were only 195/65/15. ;)

I feel for you OP. You came with a question and then get de-railed by demands to justify yourself, opinions, aspersions and derision, you did not ask for or giving you completely contrary advice to that which you came for. It happens a lot on this site, which is a shame.

Your question "currently 275/30/19. Can I go to 265/35/19" - I wish I could answer a simple yes or no with evidence. That is what you wanted, right? Maybe better to phone a few tyre places and ask there.
