Firstly, I’d like to say hello to everyone here. I’ve been browsing the forum for a few weeks now and have just bought my first MB. A 1999 model W220 S500. I have always liked these big cars and have finally treated myself.

I have found a rust free example which seems to be quite a rarity for this year/model, but it does have a few niggles that I need to sort out. The most important (more of the others in later posts) are the tyres that are fitted. Apart from the fact that they are budget tyres that I would hesitate to fit to a little town car (Nankangs), I think that the size is incorrect.

According to the Handbook that came with the car they should be 225x60x16
According to the EPC, putting in the VIN number brings up 225x55x17
What is actually fitted is 225x55x16

Can anyone please tell me what the correct size should be for this vehicle?

Thanks
Matt

Hello and welcome to the forum.

The 220 on standard 16" wheels uses 225 x 60 x 16"

for 17" x 7.5j they use 225 x 55 x 17"
for 17" x 8.5j they use 255 x 45 x 17"

Hope this helps

Many thanks Malcolm,
Seeing as 16” tyres are currently fitted, then they must be 16” wheels. They measure 17” from rim to rim on the outside.

According to an online calculator, the 225x55x16 fitted are 3.5% smaller than the correct size 225x60x16. This must adversely affect gearing, speedometer reading, MPG etc.

I’ll get them changed as soon as possible.
Thanks again.
Matt
