I have had my 2004 E270 since May this year.
Since i bought it, after driving for about 15 - 20 minutes, a droning noise just seemed to slip in from nowhere:(
I couldnt actually pinpoint where it was coming from, but it was so bad that i thought it was a failing wheel bearing.
Read some of the posts on the glycol / radiator issue and got worried.
However, i changed my (worn) Pirelli's to Kumos at the weekend, and hey presto - noise is a gone. :)
Just posted this in case others find similiar noises worrying.

The large V treads are the worst that I know of for making a noise. If any part of the tread is not level with the the rest, it can set up a humming Avons were very bad for this some time back

I had it as my Federals wore - I too thought it was a wheel bearing and was pleased when the garage said one needed adjusting - but it was still there. New Khumos are she's nice and quiet.

We went out to Grimsby & Cleethorpes yesterday the droning on the concrete M180 was very bad. Terrible road surface for wide low profile tyres IMO.

I have to say I have a theory on this, as I noticed when my first set of bridgestones wore down they droned and got noisy, but they looked ok, it was only when I took one off i realised they were on the limit.. So maybe the tyre manufacturers make em noisy so rich guys will change them when they get noisy.. and dangerous.. just a theory..
