My SL500 (R231) needs new tyres and as it’s a full set, I don’t need to match anything. The car is currently on Continental Sport Contact 5’s which I believe matche OEM. My current thought is simply replace like with like although there seem to be Sport Contact 7’s around now. I hear good reports of Michelin; they are expensive but I have a current offer of 115 euro (strangely!) off a set of 4 which will help. Good reports of Goodyear asymmetrical; bad reports of Pirelli P Zero. Unifoyal Rainsports also mentioned.

My days of ‘spirited driving’ are over and I do no more than 4k miles a year so longevity is not really an issue.

Any thoughts?

I ran pirelli's (worse for wear), Dunlop (good compromise for wear & Performance and ended up on Michelins (the best).

Either the Dunlops or Michelins would be fine, if price not too far adrift, the Michelins last 50% longer in my experience.

I have been very pleased with the Michelin PS4s on my R231, they are good for grip and handling, (much better than the continentals that were on it, although these may have been quite old). Also not bad for wear.

Stalwarts can now rapidly change with compound technology and forum people often quote what was good for them some time ago.

It's hard to beat tyrereviews with their comprehensive testing and feedback reviews.

What was once a swear word is the now because of their experience from F1

SL is a heavy car, the Pirelli's wore out on mine in 9 months Michelins still had 50% tread after 1 year, how did you get on with them on your SL?

PZ5 only came out last year , so you fitted them and did enough mileage in a year or less in an SL500 to wear them out !

Unlucky I would guess...
