Yes my V8 SL63 AMG is Ulez free, the wife's BMW 2 litre 320d isn't. Much hilarity.

I have noticed a few W209 CDI's and W211 CDI's that the seller claims are ULEZ free, and show as ULEZ free on the TFL Checker. I suspect these have fallen through the cracks and won't be charged, but actually are not compliant. In the same way that some 212's that are Euro 6 with Adblue show up as liable for the fee but shouldn't be.

Get the registration of any car you are interested in and use this to check if its ULEZ free or not.

Dreaming of a CL55k - one day maybe....
Whilst I agree with all the above - the answer is how it was originally registered at DVLA.

A lot of early Merc diesels (2012 S class is one example) seem to have been registered either as Euro 6 OR in some other way as ULEZ free.....

All diesels registered after Sept 2015 (65 plate) or newer should comply.
ULEZ for petrol is Euro 4 so yes, a lot of very old Petrol cars do actually comply.

Check here...

https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/check-your-vehicle/ for London ULEZ

and here for all the others...

NOTE - not every car London ULEZ compliant is compliant elsewhere and vice-versa......

Check your own car or a car you plan to buy for the area you intend to use it.

My S211, 2005 E55k is ulez free…my SL500 ,1998, with the same M113 engine isn’t, though it was originally allowed when the system was first announced. Well thought through idea..

Used to have a C63...
As above, check the specific reg. However... good ole DVLA and .gov aren't the most thorough and, as with most things they touch, a broad brush stroke is applied, and often not very accurately.

A friend of mine bought a 55-reg (iirc) 2.7 Boxster back in the spring - it wasn't ULEZ-compliant, but the emissions figure on the V5 shows it falls inside current threshold to qualify.

He was able to challenge and get that car's status changed so he can now drive through olde Brizzle towne as much as he likes! (Behind me in an M4 Comp that is ULEZ-compliant from the outset!)

It's a slow process (surprise surprise) but if your V5 figures support it, it can be done.

Sounds weird. Reading through the posts above I am no nearer understanding this. I thought all diesels were "non compliant", (meaning you have to pay ULEZ charges), whereas all petrol engined cars were "compliant" meaning you don't have to pay.

Clearly it is not that simple ?

A lot of sellers are clearly advertising incorrectly or falsely to up their chance of selling cars that aren’t usable in some cities ?

I recently bought a 2004 E500, which is ULEZ compliant (I checked before I purchased) put a private plate on it (that came off an 02 E320Cdi which wasnt ULEZ compliant) and hey ho, it wasnt long before I got a penalty notice in the post, had to prove my car was Euro 4 petrol and sent them a copy of my V5 showing emissions and the fine was quashed, lesson learnt, in future, I will check car by emissions on V5.

Hope this helps.

They really struggle with private plates, their database was last updated in the late 60’s I think…

I have the same, my w221 is EU6 but due to private plate it’s showing as non compliant.

If I ever got a ticket, I’d simply tell them it’s their fault as their system is crap and thus, they can do the leg work to prove my car otherwise. Whose got time to fill and chase forms and papers. Their system has flaws, their problem, not mine.

Our diesel car is compliant although quite honestly since they've changed the speed limit in London to 20mph it's a joke. We had to go there last night and had forgotten about the speed change and suddenly it went to 20mph and it was like driving through toy town, totally surreal as there are so many speed cameras that no one dared go any faster. We were being overtaken by cyclists and the only time we saw any cars go fast was when a fleet of about half a dozen lamborghini's shot round a corner and sped off down the road. I guess they must be the super rich crowd who don't care if they are fined :(
