This has suddenly happened - was working fine. Very strange since its still able to lock/unlock the car. My spare key is fine when inserted into the ignition. Any help appreciated- thanks!
(for the record, I have a CLK320 - 2001 plate)

Sounds like another EIS (ign switch) Check the bottom fuse in the dash board fuse box!

To me it sounds like the key has failed as the spare key is working fine

if the spare key if fine and both work the locking ok it sounds like a loose exciter coil inside the key, if so this can be fixed by the experts. the cause is dropping the key one time too many!

You reminded me - in another post about keys and fixing the coil you mentioned finding the 1mm ferrite core difficult to get hold of. I was searching RS for beads ( a different project) and these 2 came up:

467-4009 (1.5 x 15mm)
467-3949 (.75 x 7.5mm)

Would either of these do as substitutes?

Thank you so much for that,,I do not deal with RS,,but I will be in Watford 1 day this week , so maybe I can get winding.

That will cut the cost right down if this comes off
