I have just made a return trip from my elderly mothers house in absolutely appauling driving conditions. Rain almost as heavy as Monday. Having driven through however many road breached by water on Monday I elected to come home on the motorway system as far as possible. So 2 Miles to join the M5 at Junct 2 proceed to M6 South Join M42 proceed to join M40 leave M40 at Junct 15 another 7 miles home mainly on the A46. Now between Spagetti Junc and the M42 slip is temp 50 so the figures below are still quite remarkable.

54 Miles 53 MPH Average 32.6 MPG, Malcolm had warned me that this engine was incredible looks like he was right. I can't wait to do along run over 150 miles. V8's Rock.

A diesel saloon would average 46mpg doing that lot. A lot more efficient.

But the OP bought it for performance and refinement and it has that in spades

That's more than my diseasal R Class did going to Edinburgh & back, but I suspect that it would be somewhat less after driving it 'enthusiastically'

Emilys Dad, Enthusiastic, was not an option but, I still averaged a mile a minute despite the roadworks and weather.

O/T - but intrigued to know why you chose that way, and not down M5 South West, then M42 East onto the M40?

Route picked because I know the midlands like the back of my hand, boxing day traffic and ****** awful weather. M42 J1 - 2 Libale to flooding / standing water and a lot a accidents, good enough reasons.

I keep a fuel log app on my phone and the last 7 fill ups have come back with this: 20.29mpg, 33.63,22.50,25.8, 29.57, 16.59 and 22.73 so, that gives an average of 20.22.
I'm not that keen on averages. Mark Twain once wrote that if you stand with one foot in a bucket of boiling water and the other foot in a bucket of ice water, then on average you will be comfortable. So I don't really look at he average of 20.22 as 25, 33 and 29 are much nicer figures to look at. Those figures are off a 50/50 motorway/town driving mix. I'm happy considering the drive and performance I have. Much nicer than any diesel, imo. :)

But he'd be driving a nasty noisy smelly horrible diesel not a lovely creamy powerful V8

And with diesel costing 5% more - the difference over a year would not be as much as you'd think:-

    12k miles @ 32mpg on petrol at 135p per litre = £2298 per yr
    12k miles @ 46mpg on diesel at 141 per litre = £1669 per yr.

So if you keep the car 3 years, then you'll save 1800 in fuel - probably spend £200 more in servicing (as long as nothing goes wrong) and so you'll save £1600 in total - trade off being you've had a cra**y diesel instead of a wonderful V8....

Oh.... and if you convert the Petrol to LPG then keep it a long time, then you could have the wonderful v8 AND run it for less than the Diesel.

I have just had to fork out £400 for a new Diesel pump for the CLK - same fuel pump on a petrol (not that it's likely one of them would fail) is about £100....

Diesel? - Never ever again - LPG all the way for me, much cheaper and a much better ownership experience.

    Hmm sadly that's why I can't run one :(

34k miles per year would cost me more than £2000 more in fuel alone!

Still I can enjoy my Elise which despite being light and doing about 35mpg normally did 18mpg the other weekend on a track day lol

Diesel 6 cylinders are smooth, potentially less reliable but you see the big miles on TDs suggesting a better longevity. Never had an issue with the performance of a modern diesel but agree swirl flaps etc are pain in the bum.

LPG costs a lot to instal and you're relying on the price staying low of LPG.

I'd probably just lump the petrol cost but £2000 is a significant sum to save if the diesel doesn't break down

The secret here is "if". If the diesel doesn't break down. And IF pigs had wings they'd fly. Nah, I'll stick to that silky smooth V8 and buy a bit more petrol. No smelly, noisy tractor sounds and when my app says 29,0 mpg again, It'll just add to my smile factor. CL500. MMMMM, NICE!!! Eat your hearts out.

Down to the Mayfly yesterday then off to Southampton (Traffic) then on to Portsmouth (Traffic) back up the A34 A44 to home. 31 MPG What's not to love?

On a similar run as I know that route I'd get over 40mpg from a E320cdi.

Up here, roads are quieter and the extra performance and baritone roar of the V8 would be appealing, but the economy cack, but your E500 would find itself up Glen Coe way

Never bothered to accurately check the fuel economy of my SL, but I have a horrible feeling, that it's about 15mpg.

While on the Moors yesterday, the delightfully accurate (sic) "economy" gauge was quite frequently against the stop where I presume zero would be if they had bothered to put the figure! This was driving gently, but slow speeds and steep hills coupled with a slush box do not make for great fuel consumption:(

All in all, it blew through £30 worth of unleaded in 90 odd miles - not great. But, I did open her up a couple of times before we got to the Moors, I love the roar of the sports exhaust, and the occasional dawdler just has to be despatched - it's the law!

I don't worry about mine. I fill it up when I need to. I would guess I am averaging problem 23/25 ... Most of my driving is motorway cruising though..
