Are you going to visit Germany, or other European countries, then be careful which car you take, nearly all Petrol vehicles since 1998 are Green, but that 2004 economical Diesel you own may be banned from entering the City your going to!!!

MY2001 ML270cdi (auto) = Red
MY2003 C220cdi (manual)= Yellow

Its law that you have a disk and can be spot fined/prohibited from driving!

Actually Low Emission Zones apply to more than just Germany.

We actually have some LEZs in the UK.

Each LEZ has it's own rules. Check this website for LEZ locations:
http://www.lowemissionzones.eu

You'll also find that they apply to all vehicles based soley on their emissions standards.

For example my E430 1998 is Euro 2 compliant which means that I'd fall foul if a LEZ demands Euro 4 compliance and yet that nice new E320CDI would be OK.

Where do you find the figures of the actual cut off points on the levels, and what is allowed

A summary of cities by country:

For a general idea of your vehicles emission standard see here:

For a more definitive answer see here, but I think that this is only for London LEV:

For actaul details on emissions heres the Wiki site reference:

Thank-you for the informative link, very interesting.

Germany is different, however. Basically your E430 is Green and can go anywhere in Germany (all Petrol models EU2-> are Green), but Diesels which are not EU4, even if they have particle filters are Yellow or Red, meaning they are denied access to cities! ie. http://www.umwelt-plakette.de/index.php?navID=27&SID=5k9gm0u52ibu331jjre207vja7

Just to add, for example, my ML270 cannot enter Hannover or Dortmund and no doubt many others will fall foul. In 2010 the C220 wont be allowed in Hannover, so a point to note for all pre EU4 Diesel owners.
