rumours are rife about the goverment is back tracking on univercity fees.
the reason seems to be that these students are leaving uni with massive debts £40'000 pounds is not unheard off.

no , but I can't see them being able to do anything about it, especially if they persevere with their socialist plan to eliminate the educated elite. (They can't follow Uncle Joe's example and have us all shot, much as they'd like to).

They call it a plan to get more kids (50%+) into uni but in my experience, certainly since the mid 70's anyone who wanted to go, and was bright enough, already could, and whatever percentage was going was a natural level. So, if they wanted to increase the numbers, the only option left was to devalue a degree to the point where it's worthless. In this way they could get the less intelligent into university on pointless courses. As usual, with any dogma based policy, they didn't think it through. They don't have the money to pay for it. Hence, rich kids now get to go and spend their time studying and driving their porsches and 09 plate mini coopers, whilst kids from households with less 2 baristers can no longer afford to go or have to spend every hour stacking shelves to make ends meet. So, we have poor kids, getting into massive debt, to get a, now worthless, degree. Genius!

It'd be nice, (I have a 13 and a 16 year old...gulp ) but, given the total mess the innumerate Gordon's made of the public finances, sadly, I doubt it.

I think they are just talking about not charging fees to the students who can live at home and those that need assistance, I think you will find that this is driven by the banks who are refusing to loan to students who may not be able to pay it back..
Life in general is gonna get tougher.. AND the Bankers are about to let the govt know who runs the show....until we the masses start lynching them..it will come about..

No - it's a load of waffle - it will be discussed but not implemented over the next 12 months but will be heavily reported by the BBC.

There's an election looming you know.

Headline grabbing - plain and simple.

Bring out my ole 1 GCE certificate and place next to my BSc certificate. It was a hard slog, expensive and lots of debt. I happened to be one of the lucky ones wrt frugality but I still left mid 90's with £6k (student Loan, Overdraft).

Now add £9-12K tuition fees plus the invariable Student Loan amounts now available and yes £30K on a Bachelors/Masters is believable.

So take living at home - mum/dad cannot fully support you, you cannot get any Dole/Income Support because you are not actively looking for employment, etc.

Cloud Cuckoo Land with the flying pink porkers if it ever comes off.

JBerks is spot on - unless you are studying a degree in Mickey Mouse subjects. Engineering/Maths/Physics/Chemistry and seriously difficult for those without the ability to understand the subjects.

Even I cannot tell you what a point charge is or how it affects another point charge. Then how to derive formulae/equations from first principles. Just use the equation and substitute in the values. That is why I am not a microchip designer but a systems engineer.

50% more students in Uni --? They all go to "UNI" now to become high flying bosses--pass out with thier varying degrees--and the get jobs in Mc-D-or as shop assistants/ shelf fillers --or on agency work in warehouses ? its all part of the government con--and they fall for it every time. Get real.

I COMPLETELY disagree with that.
I AM NOT a socialist or even tory voter. They both exist for their own means.

But I know there are many kids out there, past and present who have had the potential to be brilliant surgeons or top engineers but will never get a chance. With the constraints on numbers going to decent primary schools, poor family's and so on. Doesn't mean potential kids aren't clever or determined, just never taught well or had distractions.

There are a number of very real problems with the expectation of 50% of the populace having a University-level education, and they're not all about the devaluing of the qualification or the cost of ongoing education. An unfortunate reality of life is that there simply aren't enough employent opportunities for that number of graduates in roles that will engage them and that they will find fullfilling.

I earned my BSc in the early 1980's before the drive to increase numbers in higher education and the attendent withdrawal of grant funding (that would be unsustainable for the sort of numbers in higher education today) took place. I was at Brunel - which specialised in technology degrees - and yet even back then the number of graduates who failed to find fullfilling roles upon graduation was significant. Today it is astronomical due to the much larger number of annual graduates. Do you want fries with that?

Opportunity for higher education is important, but it can lead to a lifetime of frustration and unfullfilled expectations if there's no opportunity to use the result. Furthermore, my experience is that the notion that kids from less advantaged backgrounds have better access to higher education today than they did in the 1970's and early 1980's when there were many fewer university places is completely incorrect. Kids from a less affluent background are much less likely to seek out higher education today than they were back then because the prospect of graduating with a huge level of debt scares them off.

BTW, for the record I come from a happy, loving, but relatively poor working-class background and have been forever grateful to parents and an education system that allowed me to flourish. I suspect that if I were 18 today in similar circumstances, higher education would be an unattainable dream due to reasons of cost.

Life MUST be a balance. Why should only the kids who have had the breaks get only the best chances in life. Education and knowledge is for everyone who wants it.
If you believe in a two tier society and only the 'Best' should make it, then you might as well start talking about the Morlocks and Eloi.
If there aren't enough jobs, you will find the 'brightest kids degree or not, will make there own (given a chance).
I would rather be clever than have a PhD!
