Mercedes COMAND system with media interface as on current models does not offer speed camera alerts.

I use Garmin which also gives the location of mobile camera units and you can regularly update the info via the Garmin website on your home computer. It also takes seven digit postcodes, has TMC and voice control if you want it. Better than COMAND in many ways, but COMAND has the important advantage of being fully plumbed in.

No the umi at present doesn't have speed camera warnings. There an update due out in October which updates teh maps, speeds up the calculation time(its already pretty quick) adds better lane advice and a few other enhancements. I believe this should come on a memory stick so there may be a chance to hack the software before uploading and add the speed camera Db like you can with BMW. There was a post about the update on MBworld. I inquired about it at my local dealers but as usual they were pretty clueless, although one of the parts guys had heard rumblings of an update. On the MB world site there was a video showing the new enhancements - I'll see if I can find it - got it, here http://web.telia.com/~u43305336/umi_small.wmv

With the old COMAND systems you had to buy a DVD to update them and get your dealer to activate the changes. And it cost about £250 IIRC.

With the newer hard drive systems how is updating done and what charge is made for doing it?

Is full 7 digit postcode ability available yet/coming?

Maddening that they have lagged behind a £300 Garmin for so long.

The umi already has 7 digit postcode navigation and TMC warnings as standard. Also it has a usb connector so presumably it is updated by memory stick as there is no Cd or dvd drive connected to it, unlike the full command system. I have no idea on the cost as yet, although £250 is pretty steep for a nav update. Coming from a along line of BMW's, and a recent convert to Mercedes, I though £99 twice a year was pretty extortionate, maybe no so now...in comparison

Is that full seven digit postcode ability or just in large towns?

yes full 7 digit ability. I was pretty happy to find this on picking up my new car.

@Simon -Loving it. It's a 204 C220 CDi Sport Estate, black on Black, auto, heated seats, 6 Cd and UMI, ex demo with a 4k on the clock. Cracking deal from MB Sheffield also which makes it all the sweeter. I never really bonded with the E90 Sport 330d - top class spec, but I ahd problem after problem with it. all major stuff like DMF, clutch, wheel bearings, steering column, DVD nav drive and more. It was all fixed under warranty, but it added up to £10k's worth in 1 year!! The dealer saw more of the car than i did. Blindingly fast and great if you were in the mood to give it some beans, but tiresome on long cruises, which is where my cars normally live. The Merc is just as fast point to point as the ride is more compliant over broken road. The only complaint I have it the larger thinner steering wheel which i don't find very tactile. I think i may get one of the thicker AMG wheels....but that means a new airbag and coding for the paddles which all adds up so we'll see.

You can make the wheel thicker, relatively cheaply, by having it re-leathered with a thin layer of foam under the leather.

Actually, really hadn't though of that!! I don't suppose you would happen to know a reputable outfit in the south east - Berks/Maidenhead way?

No sorry. But ask a few local car dealers; they usually know firms who do upholstery and refurb leather seats. Such a firm could do the work easily.
